so i want to go to school in california. prolly cal poly slo stanford or usc. but here’s the problem. my first two years of high school were terrible. i did noooooo work at all. i got alot of D’s and maby a couple f’s. turned it around my junior year and senior year have great grades. all A’s and B’s with an occasional but not often c. i also play a sport in where im ranked in the country. im black also and i know for some of the other schools i didn’t mention diversity is a little problem they have. i currently have a 3.2 gpa and like i said before one of the nations best in my sport. i do alot of volunteering and i mean alot of it. i want to be in art major in college also. so what do you think my chances are into getting into any of the schools i mentioned.
Being a recruited athlete at USC or Stanford is different than just applying. I’d say your chances of getting in with a 3.2 without being recruited are not good. If you are recruited, they are better but not automatic.
what about cal poly and what if i was being recruited?
If you are being recruited, it’s an entirely different situation. The coach would be able to tell you more. It depends on the sport and how much they want you, if you are football or basketball or a minor sport. You can be the best bowler in the country and it is unlikely you’d get a spot with a 3.2. If you are the fastest at the 100 meter on the track, more likely.
Cal Poly is a state school, so admissions is entirely different. In California, they aren’t supposed to take race into consideration. Much will depend if you are instate or OOS, which major you want, test scores. Honestly, 3.2 won’t normally be enough. They will not count your freshman grades and really only your sophomore and junior grades count so you don’t have a lot of time to bring up the gpa.
its not a minor sport and im a nationally ranked guy. lets just say im well known. i dont wanna give to much info on that. im also out of state i live on the east coast. also alot of my gpa was brought way up my junior and senior year and i took mostly ap classes my senior year but would that not matter? what would the coach be able to do since it would be a different situation
Depending on the sport, for Stanford you probably would need a SAT north of 1400. Probably a bit lower for USC. But if you haven’t been recruited by now it’s probably late in the game unless you were one of those players who exploded in the AAU scene in the last few weeks in basketball. Are you talking about scholarship good or walk-on good?
Have you already graduated high school or are you projecting great senior year grades? If you’ve already graduated, what are you doing this year? Are you looking to transfer to one of those CA schools?
All of the schools you are mentioning are hard to get into. As asked above have you already been recruited at any of these schools? If you are finishing your junior year you should have already been in contact with these coach’s. They would be the ones to tell you whether your grades would make it past admissions. Particularly Stanford is very serious about their athletes having good grades and being academically qualified to be successful. Have you already taken tests (ACT/SAT) what were your scores?
im talking about scholarship good. ill just come up with a circumstance. so say if i was one of those basketball players track guys. the next big thing to come out of highschool. but my freshman year grades were terrible and my sophomore year grades were bad. my junior year i do great all A’s and B’s and my senior year i take ap classes and pass them. i turn my grades around my last two years of high school and athletically not only the best out of high school but have competed with college level olympic level talent.
It sounds as if you are a current senior. If so, have you applied to any schools yet? The process of recruitment should have started 2 years ago, depending on the sport. Has there been any contact with coaches?
i would like to kno mostly for stanford and cal poly slo ^^
You are asking for an opinion on whether you can be recruited, if that will help you get into the schools, but not able to reveal what sport. We can’t possibly know how good you are or if Stanford or USC even care about your sport… Really, if you are Tiger Woods you’ll get in but if you are just really good at tennis or golf or track, probably not. If you are ranked in your sport, if a coach was interested, you’d probably be on a recruiting list by now. My daughter was no where close to being nationally ranked in her sport, wasn’t on a state championship team, wasn’t an All American, wasn’t on a killer club team, and she received recruiting letters and calls.
Stanford recruited Christian McCaffrey with a 24 ACT. He also was a superstar from a college prep high school (but gpa was probably not above a 3.5) and both parents are alums. The rest of us have to do more.
IMO, the only way you are getting into Stanford, USC or even Cal Poly with a 3.2 is if you are Tiger/Kobe/Elway level in your sport. It doesn’t sound like you are interested in playing in college or you’d have looked into being recruited by now.
Stanford and USC do care about freshman grades. Only California public schools ignore the freshman grades and do a recalculation of the gpa for the core classes.
@getoutthehood we are trying to help you and we have all asked several times what year are you in school and if you are already being recruited and you haven’t answered these questions. I understand you not wanting to give us specific details to reveal your identity but answering those basic questions about year in school, recruiting and even if you have taken a test and your score would help us help you.
You would know already if you are being recruited by any of those schools. Are you? If so, be honest with the coaches and ask. Are you registered with the NCAA clearinghouse? The NCAA has standards and guidelines you need to achieve to be eligible academically.
