I'm a little anxious about my grades for my junior year. All the rest of my school years, I have received A's and two B's. This semester I have a C in AP Stats, three B's, and three A's. I know I need to do better next semester. Would NYU still admit me if I have poor grades just for this past semester? What about Columbia?

It depends more so on your GPA, which is an indicator of your grades throughout high school, not just one semester. NYU(Excluding STERN) will accept you as long as you maintain a decent GPA, like 3.65+ and have a good SAT score. Around 2000…

However, getting accepted at NYU may not mean much if you need significant financial aid; NYU is well known for poor need-based financial aid. In that case, you need to meet the much higher bar of getting a large merit scholarship.

A C and 3 Bs junior year makes Columbia highly unlikely. NYU, as those above have said, unlkely of you need financial aid. If you can afford the $60K, give ita shot.

The good news is that it’s only one semester. If you can address that issues that brought your grades down, you still can bring your grades up. It’s the final grades that go into GPA calculation. Don’t rush to lower your college goal yet, see what you can do next semester.

I would agree that an average GPA of around 3.65+ would be a good starting point. NYU’s average GPA for NYU’s undergraduate freshmen 4 year programs is an A-.

The SATs range from 1950-2230 for the 25%-75%.

A friend’s kid just got into NYU with one C and a dozen Bs. Of course, grades are only part of the admissions process. We’re talking about an ambitious, and active student at a very strong high school who was working up to Bs, not slacking down to them. So while perhaps anecdotal rather than normative, this shows that a strong app with a bunch of Bs can work at NYU and probably many of the finer schools across the country.
