Grades/GPA UC's look at

I am confused how UC’s look at a high school student’s grades. A friend once told me that admission officers do not look at GPA; they only look at letter grades. I told him there’s a UC/CSU GPA for a reason. I want to ask: do UC’s consider letter grades more than GPA? If I have B’s in most of my AP/honors courses, will that hurt my chances of getting admitted into a UC? I apologize if these are stupid questions.

UC admissions readers will see the full list of your courses and grades, as well as the UC-calculated GPAs.

Your letter grades make up your GPA… They are used to find your grade point average. You can’t look at one without considering the other.

If you’re referring to the GPA on your transcript, then no. The UC’s will recalculate your weighted gpa. However, your unweighted UC gpa should be relatively similar tothat on your transcript.

Addressing your second question, it depends which school. For Davis and below, getting a B in an AP class results in a net yield of 4.0. For schools like SD and LA, they’re averages hover around 4.2-4.3. Certainly, you need a lot more A’s than B’s to get into those schools.
