I got expelled during my sophomore year of high school back when I was 17, my grades were also all D's and F's at the time. Now that I'm 23 I would like to attend college and try to get a degree in Engineering. How can I get into a place like SDSU with these terrible grades? Can I take some classes at a community college to help my chances?

Yes, go the community college route for 2 years. I don’t believe that SDSU will require that you send your high school transcript to them when you transfer from community college to San Diego. I’m almost done with my 2nd year of community college and now I’m transferring to a four year. It’s been a great experience so far. Another plus about going the community college route is that many schools have transfer agreements with community colleges. Most state and UCs (except ucla and UCB) will guarantee you admission if you finish the required classes for your major at your community college and maintain a certain GPA–I believe it is a 3.0 for SDSU. If for any reason you can’t maintain that GPA, no problem- you can still apply, you just won’t get guaranteed admission. So in short, yes you most definitely can get a good education and become successful still. Even if you were required to send your grades, which I don’t thin you do (except for private schools), states and UCs always look at improvement as a good thing and take it into consideration. Good luck! If you have any questions at all, I’d be more than happy to help you out and answer them!

Oh thanks, awesome to hear! However, I’m already 23 years old, and I really wanted that ‘college experience’ of living on campus and meeting people. So is there any quicker way to get in instead of attending community college for 2 whole years?

No, there isn’t. SDSU is not going to directly admit you. No CSU is likely to directly admit you, actually, even if you have a GED.

There’s no way SDSU would accept you outright with that academic record.

The CC route is the way to go, and there’s no reason you couldn’t get into any CSU or UC you want if you work hard.

If you really want a “college experience” you could look into dorming at some of the CC’s that offer them - Cuesta (near Cal Poly SLO), Butte (near Chico), and SBCC (near UCSB) are all fairly integrated with the colleges nearby and offer the “experience.” However, I wouldn’t recommend going into debt for one of them. Make sure you do what is affordable.

Unfortunately the CC route is the only way to go to transfer over. It’ll take about 2 years at the CC for you to transfer. Don’t let not having a college experience get in the way of your future. Go the CC route and push through the GE classes and then you’ll be ready to transfer :)

Dude you’re 23, give up that dream of a ‘college experience’.
