Grades in Preq's

Im hoping to major in Poly Sci at either Cal or ucla, but i got a B in an honors preq class. Will i be at a big disadvantage?

Also i aim to have a 3.63 gpa after the fall 2008 grade update. is this competitive?

No. 1 B is no problem.
With TAP I think you have a good shot.

another question i have is that UCLA requires 4 poly sci classes whereas Cal only requires 2 + a history course. By doing 4 poly sci classes will Cal think that an apllicant is not as well rounded by doing more than the required poly sci classes??

No, in my opinion, they should be impressed by the fact that you took more than the bare minimum of poli sci classes.

yes, typically schools like it when you demonstrate an additional interest in your major

also does being a first generation college student have any effect?

I also have work experience as an intern at a bank aswell as 100hrs voluntray work.

Does this help if u have a lower GPA?

for sure it does vazman89

thanks for your help guys.

Does anybody know how easy/difficult it is to switch majors or to do a doubled major.

i.e poly sci with economics is what im looking at.

Perhaps writing down all your questions into one condensed post might make this a more efficient process for you?

I was accepted to Cal this year and plan on double majoring in Political Science and History.

My background:

GPA: 3.67 (As of the application update, it has gone up w/spring grades)
Major GPA: 4.0 (All history and political science)
Employment: 30 hrs a week as a new accounts and loan representative
Courses:
5 Political Science: (Intro American Gov’t, Comparative Politics, Intro International Relations, Area Studies: Middle East, Latin America)
5 History (American (Reconstruction - 1945), Western Civ (Ancient Mesopotamia - European Unification), History of Mexico, Latin America)
Generation status: First Generation
Extracurricular: T.A. for Department Chair, Participation in social awareness club)

As far as switching majors go, if you’re accepted to Cal you are undeclared until your first semester. You can easily do a double major but you have to seek out major advisors and get their approval. However, one thing to consider is Economics is an impacted major. This means that you’re in for some heavy competition as this major fills up quick. You can only go to a maximum of 136 units as a double major and can petition to stay on one extra semester. Have you considered double majoring in “Political Economy” instead?

I am not familiar with UCLAs requirement, kinda kicked them to the wayside once I heard back from Cal.

Note: Don’t compare yourself completely to anyone, I was stunned when I got accepted to Berkeley. It was definitely my dream school. All I can say is try your hardest and balance life the best that you can. They’ll be impressed by someone that can balance work, school and family life. Also, try and get to know your CC Professors, they can be an enormous help to you in preparing to transfer. I was fortunate to have 3 wonderful instructors that helped me go further than I could have imagined.

RMking thanks a bunch this is what i was looking for. With your GPA of 3.67, did u do any winter intersession classes after you applied in the fall?

Thanks

My CC does not offer winter intersession courses. My CC is on a semester system. The summer before applying I did take two online Economics courses. Basically, I attempted to show depth as well as breadth in my coursework. I got my GEs out of the way but I took courses that are related to my major fields of study.

IE: For the Humanities/Arts Requirement I took an Islamic Humanities course (A), a World Literature course (A) and then an Introduction to Film Course.

Social Sciences: Excluding History and political science, I took a Cultural Anthropology (B), Psychology (B), Sociology (C, I had extenuating circumstances), and Macro/Micro Economics (A).

to double major at UCLA you need to complete all low division preqs for both majors and 2 upper division courses from each major , meet with the advisors of both departments, work out an education plan that shows you can complete the major within the required unit limit of 216 quarter units, then bring all the paperwork to Murphy hall and see the counselor and discuss it with them and then they approve it.

going off track a bit, is it ok if i did my last 2 courses for the IGETC in the spring 2009 and just did most of my prereq’s in the fall 2008. as this would only leave 1 prereq left for spring 2009.

The 2 courses for the IGETC i would leave till spring are English 101(area 1) and Biology (area 5).

Is this possible???

It’s doable but both are time-consuming; I’d have one in fall and the other in spring.

but will it look bad, that at the time of application review i still have 2 corses for the IGETC to complete?

I think you’re fine as long as you’ve finished with IGETC by the spring before you transfer.

No, I’m doing 3 IGETC transferable courses in Spring '09.

I don’t believe so. I had 4 classes still left to complete IGETC before Spring semester (Biological Science, Lab, Stats, and Arts). I think they look at grade trends and interest in the major over whether or not you have completed all of your GEs.
