What happens if you get a grade of 'I' or Incomplete for a course? Do you have to contact the professor or will he contact you?

My d received an I in one class because she missed a class (& an assignment). The health center sent her to the hospital for a test. Then the teacher was absent the last week of school, complicating matters. So the teacher gave her an I and told her to complete the assignment over the vacation. I think the school policy is 3 months to make up the work. I assume that's the outside limit, depending on the circumstances.

This is college. Generally it's up to the student to contact the professor to find out how to make up the work.

Should I contact the professor by email? What should I say in the email?

If you got an I, it means that the professor is giving you a chance to make up whatever it is (and it's probably major) you're missing. So just what you're missing and how you can make it up.

I think it depends on how your school deals with it. My current school has a rule that an I will change to an "I/F" after a YEAR, so you'll have to find out your school's policy for things like this. We have quite the grading scale though, about 15 grades can be recieved:

email the professor and ask what you are missing that caused you to get the 'I', and what you need to do to fix it.

The sooner you contact the prof & make up the work the better. Don't let the I linger & drag you down next quarter. If at all possible, try to make it up during the break & clarify with the PROFESSOR how long you have to make up the work--which may be shorter than the official school policy.

I got an I when I was send to the health center & they wouldn't release me to complete my finals. They said I was too ill. It was the 1970s, the "dark ages" before e-mail & I had no way of contacting my professor until I came back from winter break in January. I immediately went to speak with the professor in January & worked really hard to make up the work (a missing program for our final). Unfortunately, I couldn't make it work no matter how hard I tried, so after trying my best for over a month, I went to the prof & explained the situation. He apologized profusely because he had removed the master file I needed to run the program at the end of the prior quarter, which was why my program COULDN'T work! (Never took another computer class after that, tho got an A in the course.)

Definitely contact your professor and find out what is going on right away. See what you need to do to get that changed and how long you have to do it.

At my college, you have the next semester to change it to a grade or it goes to fail. The Incomplete doesn't effect your GPA at all, it just counts as nothing. When you get a real grade added in, then your GPA will adjust.

I checked online and it saids I have until second semester starts before the 'I' changes into a 'F'. What if the professor is on vacation and haven't reply back to my email yet?

Email him and hope for the best. You should have an idea of what assignment you need to complete, so at least getting prepared for that would be advisable.

If you got a grade of 'I' can you still take higher level classes for which that one course was a pre-requisite?

You'd have to check with the department and/or registrar on that--the sooner the better. Good luck.
