Grades or s/nc

I know this has been addressed in other threads, but was wondering for all you current students, do most of you take your classes with a grade or do you take atleast one class s/nc? My son is a freshman and is taking all his classes for grades right now-he wants to see how that goes, but what do the majority do? And can you switch from grade to s/nc as the semester goes on if you choose do? What is the advantage/disadvantage? I have been told it really doesn’t matter for professional school after Brown and I know kids take s/nc for classes way out of their discipline-just to broaden their knowledge etc. but other thanthat, is there any reason not to take a course for a grade??

The main reasons I've taken courses not for grade have been when they're mandatory or if I have a really heavy load and I need to balance my work out a bit, I consider taking something outside of my major S/NC to take the pressure off a bit-- but in the long run I've found that despite there being a bit less mental anguish, I perform almost the same in an SNC class as a class for grade, so I rarely put down SNC at this point.

Oh, and yes you can change the option up until about 4 weeks into the semester. Typically, thechange grade date comes RIGHT before any professor gives a midterm, and this is largely intentional.
