Grades, SSAT Scores, EC's, What are my chances?

I'm applying to 2 schools, Emma Willard and Milton. If I have a few grades that are not A's, are my chances still high? I do alot of theater and I'm big with the performing arts. I was just Marry Warren in the Crucible and I'm also apart of the 12 member select chorus at my school. I am also a cross country runner and a varsity sprinter for track and field. I'm also apart of a dance team. My grades are usualy in the 90's but my chemistry and math grade are not as high as they used to be. I take all advanced and/or honors courses. I also take 2 languages: Latin and Spanish. I've been in public school for most of my life and I have no idea what to expect. My SSAT scores I think are good, i scored in the 85 percentile overall, 89% verbal, 91% reading, and 58% for math. Should i retake and try to get a higher score? And are schools going to be looking at the percentile or the actual score on the SSAT?

Anyone who attends Milton or Emma, or knows anything that could help me with my admissions, please postt!

If you could indicate what level you are at your ECs, your specific courses, and any other details you can think of, that would be helpful.

You will probably have a harder chance at Milton than at Emma. What are the SSAT scores? Have you done your interviews yet?

You are strongest in the humanities, I'm guessing?

I agree. Milton is quite competitive, and the numbers do put it on par with AESD.

your EC's sound pretty strong- what grade are you applying for?

i HIGHLY doubt milton. i don't know much about emma willard, but because it's an all-girls school their theatre program might be already strong (less CO-ED performing anxiety) and they prob won't "need" anymore actresses.. just a guess though. But honestly, i highlyyy doubt milton. highly. but def try some less prestigious schools.

blairt, why do you "HIGHLY" doubt Milton? It's a reach, certainly, as for everyone, but why do you so highly doubt it? Or do you just mean that she should have some safeties and matches?

dance56 --- I think it would be to your advantage to add a few more schools that are matches and safeties. I think you have a good chance at Emma Willard, which is supposed to be a great school. However, even with an acceptance rate of 50%, there is a chance that you will not be accepted. You certainly seem qualified for the school, but you just don't know how the applicant pool will be for them this year and what Admissions' priorities will be. Milton is a reach for almost everyone, especially day applicants because of its proximity to Boston.

There are MANY boarding schools that will you find you to be an attractive candidate. Why not add perhaps 2 more -- one a match and one a safety? That way, you will probably have happy choices in March.

Did you do practice tests before taking the SSAT? Did you score significantly higher in the math portion on the SSAT practice tests? If you did, then it might be worthwhile to retake it. If your scores reflect how you did on the practice test, then your time might be better spent considering other school options. Overall, you did very well. Of course, you know that you scored significantly higher than the general population. Congratulations!

I think your overall SSAT Score is great, but your math seems a little low.

What grade are you in?

ok well I'm a sophomore and thats the thing im worried about. Right now i'm taking all junior and senior classes. I kind of feel like i should re-take my SSAT because I don't feel like I scored as high as I could have. I didn't review as much as i should have. In all the theater and music activites i do, I'm usualy the youngest in the group. I am 1 of the 2 sophomores in the 12 member select choir at my school. But I've been reading some of the other posts about getting accepted your sophomore year and that worries me about the chances of going into a prep school for junior year. What are your ideas on this?

are you a soph or applying to be a soph?

I know that Deerfield doubles their class in sophomore year and adds loads on in junior year, so it isn't as hard to get in there if you're a soph/junior.

Dance56, I am also applying to Milton for Junior year. All I know is for freshman, you need at least in the high eighties for your SSATs. They see the whole score and consider each percentage as well as the whole, but I'm not sure which one is more important. I got a 94% for the total, but I did horrible in reading (76%) and I'm definitely retaking them. Your EC's are good and your grades aren't that bad, so I would say don't give up on Milton. Give it a try, it won't hurt.

are you guys talking about 11th grade juniors?

applying for 11th grade, yes

Msu are you applying as a day student or boarding student?

should i also contact the music department at the schools im applying to? I know for sports you talk to the coaches, is it the same with music? I know milton has a phenomenal choir, should i contact the director and talk to him when i go for my interview?

Yes. If you believe you have a special talent that they could use.

I'm applying for boarding

Does a 'special talent' really influence your chances greatly? Cause I don't think I have one. I'm pretty involved in music, but I'm not the 'best thing since sliced bread'. I also do DECA (Business marketing club), Debating, Jazz, Concert Band this year. I've done many other EC's in grade 8, but do they look at those?

Thanks a lot =)
