Grades

Is a 'B' a bad grade for a major prerequisite, even though I've gotten all 'A's in other prerequisite classes?
I'm thinking it probably is bad that I got a 'B' in macroeconomics since I applied to UCLA as Business Econ and UCI Business Admin.

Wondering this too, except I got my B in an honors polisci class :(

I was thinking that they only look at your overall GPA, not specific grades from classes…

I think Major GPA is considered as well as your overall GPA.

They definitely look at specific grades. A B is not going to look good bug assuming you have all As in other classes, you still have a chance at UCLA. definitely uci.

Don’t they only look at your Fall and Spring grades of the same year you are transferring? Ex. Fall 2012 & Spring 2013 when transferring Fall 2013?

Oh Danny how misinformed you are.

It really just depends on the UC. UCLA does take into account both your overall GPA and major GPA. Many of the other UCs just look at your overall GPA at least for the College of Letters and Science. However, usually if you’re applying to a college outside of Letters and Science e.g. Engineering, Business (if they have a separate business college), Nursing, etc. they’re going to look at your major GPA in addition to your overall GPA.

@UCBhopeful16 That’s why I’m here :(

@Danny, UCs dont look at your spring grades. They might check to see if you passed a major pre-req. You obviously don’t want to be accepted into a UC and then fail or get a D in a major pre-req.

I don’t know but what dilapidated said sounds right. I also think the major is a factor too. Maybe adcoms might let a B in o chem slide but on the other hand, all lower divison business/econ classes are usually pretty easy. It makes sense too if you think about it. Someone could have a 3.7, all A’s in their GEs but a lot of B’s in the major classes. That doesn’t look too good and vice versa maybe someone aced all their major classes but has a few B’s in their GE classes. I think the latter is better.

^^^they dont use spring grades to evaluate admissions but they definitely check ALL spring grades after you SIR to confirm that you didnt violate any of their requirements.

Re: the “major gpa” vs reg gpa- regardless of how much weight each UC places on the different gpas, they will definitely see all of your grades. They will see each class you took and what grade you got for it. Most of the UCs that people care about evaluate holistically, so its not really a matter getting a high gpa and being fine or being totally screwed for having a low major gpa. When assessing your grades, they will see any grade trends and the level of difficulty in the classes, among other things. They do NOT just see the number “3.5 cum gpa” and then decide whether or not that is good enough.

@Danny - Well I’m glad you’ve come to the best place to learn.
