Grades.

I know that you don't have to have a 4.0 GPA to get accepted into a top school, but right now as second semester grades roll in, I think I need some reassurance. I'm ending up with two B's this semester--one in my precalc class, which is an accelerated honors class, and one in physics (no honors physics is offered). This brings my GPA to somewhere around a 3.87 range unweighted. I've taken all honors/advanced/AP courses offered since freshman year.

How much does this hurt my chances overall at top schools like Yale? My parents are devastated (the first B's are the hardest, I hear) and I'd like to be able to tell them something positive.

Depends on everything else,
SATs? rank? etc.

Most importantly is if you can offer Yale something grades doesn't such as a unique ability, talent etc. that can make you stand out. In that case, the 2 Bs might not kill you. If not, you're gonna be compared to a bunch of people with 4.0s, 1600s who DO have unique gifts.

So the point is: no, its not the end of the world and you still have a chance. But, next year (assuming you're a junior) , make sure you bring you grades up senior year first semester. And if possible, apply early.
