I know the academics are outstanding, but how well does Wesleyan work out for a premed student? Is there grade deflation/inflation? Are science/math classes graded on a curve?
Can you take a class P/F ? How hard is it to maintain a 3.7 in anticipation of applying to med school?

It's tough. Just going from personal experience, I took AP Biology and AP Physics in high school, got As and 5s on the exam, and still had a tough time in the gateway courses Principles of Biology II and General Physics II. Lots of stressing and late nights. The classes are usually curved. I think you can take them pass/fail but if you want to go to med school, then you probably won't want to do that.

There is minimal grade inflation. It isn't like some of the humanities classes, where you can just slap together a 5 page paper the night before without much thought into it and still get a B. You earn what you get in these classes. I think the average grade for each class is around a B-/C+ (2.3/2.7), even with the curve. At least it was for BIO 182 and PHYS 116. So if you can maintain a 3.7, then that is pretty impressive.

Intro Bio and Orgo definitely do try to weed out premed kids who don't really want to be premed (which is frustrating to non premed kids). But I know premed students who do have 4.0s - it's definitely doable. There's also a huge and really nice pre-med community that you can complain and stress out with before orgo tests while staying up late in study groups in SciLi. It's a fun atmosphere mostly :D

Wow Wraider...average grades in bio and physics: B-/C+. Then its almost impossible to maintain a 3.7, especially if the med. schools expect at least a 3.5 (?) average in the sciences. Does Wesleyan have a decent med. school acceptance rate? Do you think more students at Wesleyan are "weeded out" than at other schools?

"Over the last five years (2000 - 2006 entering classes), acceptance rates at U.S. medical schools for all applicants with a Wesleyan BA has ranged from 67% to 80%
Wesleyan graduates with overall grade point averages of 3.5 or above have fared even better, with acceptance rates ranging from 85% to 100% over the same five-year period"

:D

FridaKahlo... keep in mind that the courses I took were the Intro gateway courses for people wanting to enter the Bio or Physics major. They are probably a little bit harder than average just to weed out the people who weren't really that interested in Bio or Physics (like me).

The premed kids I know all have above 3.7 GPAs. It's just about how much time you put into your classes. You can do it if you really really care, but many kids show up at Wesleyan thinking they want to be premed, but without wanting to do the work that it will take to actually become a doctor. When they don't feel like studying their butts off in Intro Bio and Orgo, they realize they don't want to be doctors after all. And decide to do something else with their lives.

Does anyone know what the average GPA at Wesleyan is in general by the way? I heard it was somewhere around a 3.2-3.3?
