Grades

Generally speaking.....what grading system does Duke use? Is it similar to HYP? Where could I read more about Duke's system of grading?

...There is a website which was posted on cc that listed all the Harvard professors and the average grade given for each class. Does Duke make this information available.

...Are any classes pass/fail?

...What is the average GPA?

Any other information would be appreciated. Thanks.

GPA is from a 0 - 4 scale.

A = 4
A- = 3.7 (not 3.666666)
B+ = 3.3 (not 3.333333)
B = 3.0

You don't receive bonus points for honor courses.

Average GPA for trinity = around 3.2
Average GPA for pratt = around 3.3

(those averages are vague approximations)

wow --->engineering's GPA is higher than arts & sciences

The dean's list cut off is higher for engineers.

Perhaps there are more slackers in trinity :p

Thanks nero.... Let us get more specific and say the lowest score on a stat test is 91%......what is the grade? Are there professors at Duke who would consider this failing because it was the lowest score in the class. Does each professor decide how they are going to handle grades or does Duke have a university wide grading policy?

I'm not sure about that. I think it depends on the professor. I don't think any of them do that curve though.
As for you pass/fail question. All the PE's are pass/fail and grant you 0.25 or 0.5 credits. A handful of music classes - mainly instrumental, are pass/fail too.

What is the cut-off for the Dean's list?

My internet isn't working very well so I can't click the link... but I remember my premajor advisor telling me something like the top 5% or something. All I know is it's next to impossible... at Duke, that is.

We have a Dean's List?

Semester GPA in top 1/3 of all undergrads = Dean's List.

Semester GPA in top 10% of all Trinity undergrads = Dean's List with Distinction.

Academic Honors at Duke

Usually, the cut off for Dean's list (top 30% of Trinity / Pratt) is at around 3.5-3.7

cut off for Dean's list with distinction (top 10% of Trinity / Pratt) is at 3.925 (3 As, 1 A-)
