Grades

I'm from Canada, but I really want to apply to a few colleges in the states. I'm a little confused about a couple things and was wondering if some people could help me. Do grade 9 marks count as much as grade 11 and 12 ones do? If I did decently in grade 9 but very well in grade 12 would colleges take that into consideration or not? Also how do you convert percentages to GPA? Everything I read is different, some say a GPA of 3.0 is 70% some say 85% ...

Colleges vary on what years they count. Most count all four years in addition to any hs level classes taken in middle school (primarily math & foreign language). An upward trend in grades is always given consideration.

The colleges will recalculate your grades. The US has a wider variety than you might think. Admissions offices do it all the time. They deal with numerical, percentage, 4, 5, or 6pt scales. Your school will send a profile that will tell them what your grading scale was. For instance was an A 90-100, or 93-100. Both are common. A 3.0 is a B and that varies from a 80-92 generally. In most schools at the end of the year the numerical grade on 100pt scale is converted to a 4.0 scale. Students who have taken AP classes may have received weighted grades, resulting in a GPA over 4.0. Some colleges recalculate all grades to a 4.0 scale, removing any weighted grades.

Are you more confused? I guess the point is, your grading scale will accompany your transcript so the admissions office will understand what your marks actually mean. It’s no different than what they do from students applying from North Carolina, Virginia, or California.
