possibility of networking without raging.

As in, "fails to take into account the possibility of networking" without going into a rage, you mean?

On tonight's Colbert Report:

*On why people go to college - "To get those connections for a job? And to make it into a frat!"

johnleemk, your reading comprehension sucks. Read: |true value| of |an Ivy League education|. Note the two disjoint sets. Hey, if sakky and IK say it, you know it's true.

Look, I'm not disputing your primary assertion (that the main value of attending an Ivy League school is networking); I'm taking issue with your obvious inability to write precisely. "Attending an Ivy League school" != "an Ivy League education". No wonder you're in writing 5.

I'll spell it out. Slowly. The...true value...of an Ivy League education...is...

You're reading: An Ivy League education...is...(blank).

Hey, at least Writing 5's going swell. C's in both your lower division Math class and Freshman seminar indicate to me a poor assessment of admissions in placing you into the appropriate classes.

So nobody ever taught you how to parse an English sentence? This isn't Japanese. "The true value of an Ivy League education" is functionally equivalent to "An Ivy League education's true value". The correct sentence to convey your meaning is "The true value of an Ivy League experience" or "The true value of attending an Ivy League school".

Also, cite your sources, because I don't have a single C in my seminar, and neither does the admissions committee have anything to do with academic placement. Sounds like someone shouldn't have been getting drunk off his ass at orientation.

hmm, what is Writing 5?

Disclaimer: johnleemk and I are actually good friends who feel like arguing on an online forum over studying for their respective midterms tomorrow.

Yeah, so there is intellectual discussion at pretty much any school you go to. The two germane questions are
(a) what topics the discussions focus on
and
(b) the availability of such intellectual discussion [i.e. how many students in the school are open to such discussion and how accessible those students are]

But really, one is not guaranteed to have intellectual convos at any school (unless one takes a course, in which case the convos are heavily guided by the professor, instead of the student), esp. when one only interacts with a small subset of the student body anyways (the question is why?) this is probably especially relevant to schools that are high power pressure cookers. hm

and really, intellectual discussions are often fruitful when they're not always about religion or politics

it's often more about the student's fit relative to the school as well

im 2 years into college and i never got drunk or laid

In ANY statistical analysis, you want to find out where all the data points converge, NOT where the outliers are. sakky, SilvaRua, and other ACTUALLY mathematically inclined posters have acknowledged this

cite evidence of silvarua saying this plz

Haha. It was probably some other guy. sakky has definitely said this before though.

Midterm was pretty good. Makes me glad I spent all night procrastinating and arguing with that douche.

hey guys ... you know each other, and now you're wasting everyone's time ... start a new flame in a new thread, so anyone who cares which '11 is more annoying can read that, and people who are absurdly interested in grading at dartmouth will actually have insight if they click the given thread.

God, yes. Thanks, Rightnotleft.

My son is an '11 and I sure hope he's not hanging out with you guys.

Will you guys please stop it?

As my dad would often say: Kids, can you take it outside?

Are you guys finished? Anymore shots left?

Note the disclaimer. This was just a facetious expenditure of time between two friends who are laughing at the responses that followed shortly. Note the Colbert-esque approach that johnleemk initially put forward!

Much ado about nothing. Indeed.

jesus christ...

anyways, i've saved the contents of this thread, to be saved along with all the other charizardpal, isthatcatfish, and random threads about sex.

I thought you guys said that you weren't posting here anymore now that we've started college -- and yes, I am aware that pointing that out makes me a hypocrite of epic proportions. I don't have any more midterms, but there's this paper I'm meant to be revising for my seminar tomorrow...

(For the record, I also know Big Brother 1984 and johnleemk personally.)

cami:

May I suggest you find friends with a life?

Camelia: Good to see you back on CC. Hope you're enjoying yourself!!

Thanks, VeryHappy. :) I'm having a fantastic (if stressful) time here -- I hope your son is, too!
