I just finished my freshman year at the UofR and had a question regarding my grades.

My fall semester I received all A-'s and one B and past semester I received essentially the same thing (some grades aren't up but I have a general idea of how I did). I am pre-med and am concerned that having not received any A's looks really bad. How concerned should I be? I obviously will work way harder next semester but I was really diligent both these past semesters. Any input is really appreciated.

Thank you! :)

It sounds like you’re on track to have a sufficiently strong GPA for med school. Generally, you will need to have 3.6 or higher by the time you apply. (But this is general advice and your specific situation may be different. Even a GPA in 3.3 - 3.4 range is not fatal IF all your other factors are strong–MCAT score, LORs, ECs-- and you’re willing to apply broadly to well chosen list of MD and DO schools.)

Medical schools do not expect all perfect A’s. B’s are OK so long as they aren’t too plentiful and even a C or or two won’t keep you of med school.

Have you been to Career Center to talk with health profession advisors? They are an invaluable resource and you should go introduce yourself. They can answer all your pre med questions.

If you have questions about things specifically pre med, you’ll get better answers if you post them in the Pre Med Forum.

AAMC grid on GPA/MCAT scores of all applicants and matriculants for the past 10 years.

A GPA between 3.4-3.59 and an average MCAT 30-32 has 53% chance of being accepted.

While odds do go up with a higher GPA and higher MCAT, there are NO GUARANTEES for med school and even 4.0 GPA/40 MCAT applicants get rejected each year.
