In intro level science courses like chemistry, physics, and biology how much do the professors typically curve on a exam?

Depends on the school, and avgs. in the class. But usually they curve to 80's or so, so maybe 5-10-15 points.

Sorry to be stupid, but what does "curve to 80's" mean? 80% is a C?

An 80% is usually a B- at most schools. But like I said it depends on the professor.

I had a 76% as my final grade in Bio last fall, but thanks to the underacheiving class I recieved a 87% as my final grade. Oh what a world!!!

It's compleltely up to the professor.

Any test that I've taken that was curved was curved to 78-80. No higher than 80, and I have had a test curved down to 80 as well.

Do all professors do this? I hope mine does, I recently failed my calculus midterm and I wanna get as many points as I can, especially since he says he won't drop any of our lowest grades.

first off, teachers usually don't make curves untill the end of the semester. Also, if the avg for the class is within a certain range, the class will most likely not be curved at all.

The stories i've heard of about classes being curved down are very few and far between.

there was a bio class here that had an average of 58 on their midterm. the professor scaled it 20 points.

i was in that bio class cries (but i got an 89 w/out the curve, so I'm not too sad)

my bio teacher scales it so the average is a b- (80) and my chem teacher won't tell us what the curve is, but a c- (70) last year was a 64. my calc teacher DOESN't curve...and the class average is like 68...GAH

oh man, an 89 is like, good. you're pretty well off in that class then.
Wait, so in chem the teacher moves the curve down or something? 70 -> 64 (?!). how does that work and how come I didn't hear that (we have departmental tests). My cal teacher doesn't curve either and I have no idea what our class average is. we have Dr. Z though:).

EDIT: I read that statement wrong. I was rushed since I had a class to go to. 64 -> 70.
