Grading scale??

Ok so my school has this thing where your semester grade is 40% of your first quarter 40% of your second quarter and 20% of your final. So if I have a 84% in a class first quarter what do I need to get next quarter and on my final to get an A in the semester?? How does this work??

There’s a range of values that could work. Assuming an A was a 92, getting a 100 on your second quarter and a 92 on your final would result in a final average of 92. To adjust from there, for every one point lower on your quarter you need to achieve an additional 2 points on your final. If an A is lower than 92 you’ll have an easier time of it. If you still have questions, I recommend discussing with your teacher. You may find that there are additional projects or extra credit assignments you could do to raise your first or second quarter scores.

Best of luck!

Thanks! An A in my school is an 89.51 or above… so basically I need then a 96 on my 2nd quarter and a 96 on my final??

If you’re on a 10 point scale (Anything that rounds up to 90 and higher for an A) , then the 84 you have now with a 96 2nd semester and 90 on the final will give you a 90 average.

To think about it another way, the first quarter and second quarter grades need to average themselves out. So since your first quarter grade was 6 points below an A (90-6=84) your second quarter grades need to be 6 points above an A (96). With only those two factors to consider you’d now have a 90. As long as you don’t score lower than a 90 on your final, you can’t possibly pull that average down (to geek out even further, since the final is only 20% of your grade, it will only affect your final score by one point for every 4 it deviates from your prior average-- so even if you scored an 89, it would only pull your final score to 89.75).
I envy you guys. My school uses an illogical 4.7 GPA scale and a modified 7 point grading scale. So at my school a 90 is a B, 91 and 92 are B+ and 93-94 are A- 95,96,97,98 are A and 99 is an A+ (You cant get an 100).
