Graduate Engineering At Rochester (GEAR)

I just wanted to inform everyone that the Graduate Engineering At Rochester (GEAR) finalists were just approved by our Dean today.

The GEAR invitation / decline letters are scheduled to go out sometime next week. I will add another post to this thread when the letters go out the door.

For more information on GEAR, check out this new website: University of Rochester : College Admissions

Best of luck to our Combined-Admission Program applicants,

Tyler

Hey Tyler,

I just have a quick question will i receive the invitation/decline letters to GEAR soon even though i applied at the normal deadline rather than the priority deadline?

Thanks!
Andrew

Regardless if you are an ED applicant, an EN applicant, or a Regular Decision applicant, you will receive a GEAR invitation / decline letter soon.

We have not mailed the GEAR letters yet, but I will post in this thread when they are sent.

So we could conceivably hear about GEAR before we even know whether we’re accepted EN?

The GEAR invitations and decline letters are going out in today’s mail. Many of you will receive these letters this week, but if you live far from Rochester you might not receive it until next week.

MisterK - yes, this means that you will hear about your GEAR outcome prior to your EN outcome. If you connect the dots, a GEAR finalist invitation = an EN admit. However, a GEAR decline does not necessarily = a EN decline. We had a lot of qualified engineering students apply to the GEAR program, and we couldn’t invite them all. Some of the students who were not selected as GEAR finalists will still receive admit letters.

The GEAR applicant pool is becoming stronger and stronger each year as the program gains recognition. Congratulations in advance to all of the finalists!

Tyler, would you be able to share the interview dates for the GEAR Finalists and the Admitted Students Dates, too? Thank you.

The GEAR Finalist Interview event will take place on Monday, February 27th. If you are a finalist, the invitation will contain more information.

On Friday, February 10th we are announcing our “2016 Experience” dates on our website. All admitted students will also be notified via email / snail mail in the upcoming weeks. We are going to offer 7 open campus dates for admitted students throughout the month of April. (April 2nd, 6th, 9th, 14th 16th, 20th and the 23rd are the projected “Open House” dates.) Be on the lookout for this information, it is coming soon.

Hi Tyler,

How many GEAR finalists were invited for an interview this year? How many students do you anticipate will be ultimately accepted into the GEAR program for next year? Thanks.

kidsmom4,

We invited 80 GEAR finalists this year out of the ~200 that applied. There is no set quota for the number of finalists who are admitted into the GEAR program. Hajim School of Engineering faculty members will help us determine which candidates receive a GEAR acceptance after the interviews take place.

Hey I am just wondering why I haven’t gotten any response from GEAR?

-Andrew

Andrew,

Give the Admissions Office a call. An Admissions Counselor will be able to open your file and investigate the problem.

Best,

Tyler

Tyler,
Thank you! I shall give them a call tomorrow!
-Andrew

Hello Tyler (or anyone else with GEAR experience),

I did not find much information on how the GEAR interviews are conducted; do they consist of a panel asking questions to better get to know the applicant? Who does the panel consist of? Thank you in advance!

bookannelida,

The GEAR interviews will be conducted by an Admissions Counselor and a Professor / Staff member of the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Throughout the conversation, we hope to gauge your excitement for the University of Rochester and your preparedness to engage in a combined B.S./M.S. program. The conversation will steer itself through your interests and engineering-related experiences.

I hope that helps!

Are you a GEAR finalist? Did you get the new parking lot information? On Monday, February 27th (the Finalist Interview Day) no parking will be available on the main campus. Instead, parking is being offered just south of campus at 300 East River Road, Rochester NY, 14623.

A shuttle bus will take students and their families to and from campus from 7:30am-4:30pm.

Let me know if anyone needs any GEAR questions answered. The event is coming up soon!
Tyler

Hi Tyler,

Thank you for your thorough reply! It was very helpful. Is there a time frame for each interview?

Thanks again! This sounds like a great event.

Good question,

Once you park your car at the East River Road parking lot described in my previous post, a shuttle bus will drop you off at the Wallis Hall Admissions Office. When you check in and pick up your welcome pack at Wallis Hall, you’ll find out when your interview is.

All interviews will take place between 1-3pm, and each interview lasts approximately 15-20 minutes.

Tyler

The 2012 GEAR Finalist Event has just ended! To all of the participants… thanks for attending!

We will have to schedule a few Skype interviews throughout the week, and we hope to make our final GEAR decisions by the middle of next week.

Best of luck to all the finalists, I will post again when the GEAR letters go out (could be a couple of weeks from now).

The GEAR Admit and Decline letters have been printed. Our Dean still has to sign them, but they should enter the mail stream sometime tomorrow.

Good luck to all of the GEAR Finalists!

Tyler, how many GEAR Finalists were admitted to the program?
