What are some of the best schools in the US for studying ethnomusicology? Bonus points for programs with at least one professor specializing in gamelan or other East/South Asian music.

Wesleyan and UCLA come to mind right away. Both have fantastic ethnomusicology departments. There are fabulous Carnatic South Indian classical music professors at Wesleyan. A real specialty. Other South Asian music, as well, of course.

definitely, UCLA is on the top for ethnomusicology. Professor Helen Rees teaches the Music 20C Music of Asia. At UCLA, usually, the graduate students take the undergrade 20 ethnomusciology series. At UCLA, we have many performing ensembles for world music as well. UCSB also has an ethnomusicology program.

Cal has a decent program, check the creds on U-Dubs site:

U of Maryland as well:

[University of Maryland School of Music](http://www.music.umd.edu/divisions/musicology_and_ethnomusicology/)

The Society for Ethnomusicology has a listing of programs:
[SEM - Guide to Programs](http://webdb.iu.edu/sem/scripts/guidetoprograms/guidelist.cfm)

It’s just a list–without any commentary. But click on a school and you get a full list of degrees offered, faculty bios and their research interests.

I know someone starting at UMD-College Park and she’s pretty excited about it. Her research interest is Sikh ritual.

University of Washington-Seattle is great as well

Thanks for the info so far. The SEM list is particularly helpful.

My specific interests are in Balinese (gamelan) and Chinese (Peking Opera) music.

In addition to UCLA & Wesleyan, check out U Wisconsin, Cornell U, Hawaii (Manoa), Michigan, possibly Indiana U (Dept of Folklore & Ethnomusicology)

Just adding a link to mamenyu’s prior post to a potential site of interest: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1062497607-post451.html

CalArts has a fabulous Gamelan set and a great Gamelan teacher (Dr Wenten) if you are at all interested in Gamelan performance.
