Graduate Housing

I will be starting my MS this September and thought I should ask what the graduate housing is like at Stanford. Is it mostly on-campus or off-campus, and are there possibilities to live with other students in private digs/houses or is it more common to live in a dorm similar to undergraduates?

Where I studied in South Africa, many of us moved into “digs” (private housing) with our friends for the final two years of university. Is this similar to US universities and Stanford in particular?

Any help would be great, thanks!

@JeffR1992 The “digs” (if such a thing were available) in Palo Alto would likely be cost prohibitive for graduate students. This is addressed in one of the later pages of this PDF file.

I believe that most graduate students live in graduate student housing, but I have no relative experience since my son is an undergrad. It looks like much of it is apartment-style.

Housing option in Stanford and Palo Alto is very limited.
Check : www.zillow.com, SUpost.com, Sfbay.craigslist.org . Supost.com caters to Stanford students.
One bedroom/1 bath studio will cost you min. $2000/month. Renting a room will cost you $1000/mo., shared bathroom and comes with a roomie.

My son is an undergrad, his dorm is across the street from Munger Graduate Housing, one of the newest housing,
It’s a very nice building with a convenience store nearby (Munger Market).
I live 30 min. drive south of campus, so I’m familiar with this part of Bay Area. Housing has been the biggest problem for locals for many years.

Thanks very much Hoggirl and Kathsj. That pdf I was linked to is exactly what I was looking for. Would love to get into one of those 4-person apartments.
