Since many students who attend Rice come in w/ >30 hours of AP credit, do they tend to graduate in 3 years or they take their time and complete more hours than are required for an undergraduate degree and graduate in 4 years?

My friend who is at Rice is majoring in Statistics and he plans to graduate in three years. Obviously, a lot start as sophomore students... but as with most colleges where this happens, some choose to take their time. Especially if you are doing work study as well... that will take up more time and you might not want a full course load.

However, three years = fewer loans and less debt!

I guess it depends on what you are majoring in and what prerequisites there are to the courses required for your major.

Most people do four years anyway. You just get advantages such as being able to register for classes earlier with all of the AP credit.

I came in with 3 semesters of credit and I'm planning on staying for four years. Not only does this give me more time to study things I want (makes double-majoring easier, or I have more time to devote to extra-cirricular things) but most of my AP credit was useless. I was able to get D3 and most of D2 out of the way (natural and social sciences), but none of my credits really counted for any major requirements (except for Calc BC--I'm a math major, possibly adding physics). Instead, my AP has been more useful for allowing me to register a day or two earlier than I otherwise would have.

I talked to a guy at Rice who tried to do this in Physics, and he was the only unhappy person at Rice that I met. His mistake was that he had the physics, but he didn't know the math for the classes. Now he's an Applied Mathematics major, and he's going to graduate in 4 years.

ifeldman do you mean 30-something instead of 3?

i think the only argument for graduating early is the money issue. i think it is not worth it to miss out on a whole year of college in your life---a life that u only live once. people go through life and try to rush through everything but we all end up in the same place when our time comes. im not trying to sound morbid man but just take ur time.
