I've just been presented with the choice of paying $40,000 a year in tuiton for a master's in international relations from Johns Hopkins, or going to the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Switzerland for $0 a year. I know that Johns Hopkins has an excellent program that would put me in a good position to get jobs. What about the Graduate Institute? Is there anyone out there who is knowledgeable about this place?
Thanks.

Hey, I have also gotten a great scholarship with the Graduate Institute and I plan on attending in the fall. From what I understand it has an excellent reputation. Of course, so does Johns Hopkins, but all that debt is something to really think about. The Graduate Institute has exchange programs with some really good schools in the US, so you might consider that as a way to develop your network here (I’m also in the US) if that’s part of your concern.

Go where the funding is. Besides, Geneva is a great city with lots of international organizations.

I was born and raised in Geneva. If you do go, you’ll have an amazing time, but be sure to factor in living expenses. Geneva is great but being in Europe would seem to only make sense if you feel like you can actually benefit from being geographically there because no matter what once you’re there it’d be hard to come back to the United States (especially since it’s so beautiful and going elsewhere in Europe is so easy). Since it’s international relations, it might make sense though. Geneva is the hub for international NGOs and GOs too…
