Graduate School Application - About GRE Scores

Hi everyone,

I am planning to take the GRE on December 29, 2009. I will be taking the computerized test. Although we receive the verbal and math scores immediately, I would like to know how soon will I be able to receive the writing score? I ask this because, I will need to submit my GRE scores to Graduate Schools within 10 days of that test day. I am afraid my writing will not be scored within that time frame.

Do you know how long it takes to grade the writing? Do you know if graduate schools typically need the writing score PRIOR to the application deadline - or is it okay to submit the math/verbal before the application deadline and then the writing score after the deadline?

Thank you,
Neo

It took about 10 business days from my test date to when I could see my scores online.

I would contact each school you’re applying to and ask when they need the scores.

It’s fine to submit the math/verbal before the deadline and the writing score later.

The official score report is ready (and, if you listed score report recipients on test day, sent out) by about 10 days after the actual test. You do not have the option of submitting only the quantititative and verbal sections (officially). Just make sure your schools are designated as score recipients, and they will receive the official report early enough to consider it.

I thought the OP was referring to self-submitted scores.

Kryptonsa36 is absolutely correct that the official score report will list all scores at once.

Generally speaking, grad departments give a little leeway on anything coming from a third party - letters, scores, transcripts, etc. They have an official deadline listed on the app, but the real deadline is the day they start reviewing applications - typically around the end of January (after the holidays and through the first few weeks of classes). In most cases, if you are missing something from a third party they will call and check with you if they do not receive it.
