I'll be a freshman in college next year and I'm looking ahead to getting my master's in engineering at the top schools that rejected me for undergrad (MIT, Stanford, Berkeley).

At the moment it looks like I'll either be going to Illinois, Michigan, Carnegie Mellon or Northwestern.

Which one of these schools would look best when applying for a Masters (straight out of senior year) at Stanford or MIT mainly?
I'm planning on working hard wherever I go (something I didn't do in high school) so I can get the GPA and the research for MS admissions.

Thanks for the help.

What engineering major are you interested in ? If you want to study electrical or computer engineering, I suggest you go to CMU (note: CMU does not offer two separate EE and CompE degrees, but only a single BS in ECE). For any other engineering major, UIUC or Michigan may be better choices. I’d rule out Northwestern given the other 3 available options (unless you want to study Industrial Engineering, in which case NW would be a good choice).

Any of those 4 aforementioned schools would look good though on your graduate school application, provided that you maintain a high GPA and get lots of undergrad research experience. CMU is particularly good for the latter, being a smaller university where you will be closer to your prof’s and have ample research opportunities.

The school that’ll look best is the one you enjoy going to, since you’ll like being on campus all day working in the lab, staying late to do problem sets, and meeting people to keep you sane.
