Given the fact that Davidson is a top ten LAC known for its rigorous academics why don't they do a better job at placing their students into top graduate programs, med or law schools?
When I looked at the senior surveys for the past two years there were some good schools listed but not the top programs that one would expect. Am I missing something? Do most kids take a year off, maybe work before applying? It appeared that only 25% go on to grad school.

A TON of kids take a year off. Also, one thing that's rather sad is a lot of Davidson students are really discouraged by their final GPA. Actually (and I found this intriguing but a little startling), many Davidson students go straight to excellent jobs. I believe our Career Office told us over 60% of Davidson's graduates immediately receive outstanding job officers that they can't refuse.

But no, Davidson actually has a lot of students going to Ivy League graduate programs, or else great programs at schools like Duke, UNC, and Emory. A HUGE number of premed students get into their first choice med school. 99% of Davidson's premed students are accepted at med schools, and over 50% of them go to their first choice school. That's one of the best statistics in the country for med school.

Graduate schools, law schools, etc. recognize the rigor of Davidson College and the high work ethics of the students, more so than of that at most schools.
