Ok, well I am sure there are a multitude of threads pertaining to this, however, I did not find what I was looking for when I searched. Well, I have no idea where my future school ranks and a lot of people probably haven't heard of it. In the end my current goal is to get into Georgetown or Johns Hopkins for an IR Masters. Does going to a "better" school necessarily help you when it comes to that, because clearly at a top school they would assume it would be harder to get a higher GPA than if you were to go to a school like Cleveland State. As I said I have no idea where my school ranks, well, it isn't super awesome in the rankings, I know that at least, but it is also semi-expensive. My question is would it be better to go to a school where I will end up being in a decent amount of debt at the end or would it be smarter to go somewhere I can go to for practically free, even if that may mean a school like Cleveland State? Would going to Cleveland State make it that much harder to get into somewhere like Georgetown or JHU for Graduate school? I know it is not all the name that matters, but what you do there.. but I just feel like my chances would be dramatically lower if I were to go there.

Good question, but I’m not sure if I have a good answer. It matters to some extent, but the extent of that some is nebulous. It’s definitely possible to get into selective schools even if you’re coming from a less selective school, as long as you did well. But again, it depends. Maybe you could ask people at the colleges you’re thinking about whether they know of students who went to selective graduate schools.
