Is it better to graduate at the bottom of the class at a top university (harvard, yale) or at the top of the class at an average state university (that's not virginia or nc or cali.) for admittance into graduate school?

Personally, I think being top in a "lesser" school is better for grad school. Have you seen how many Harvard, Yale, MIT professors graduated from the University of Wyoming (random example), Michigan State University, etc.? Medical schools favor applicants from their own school- but most graduate schools want fresh blood.
