Oops. FSU doesn't have a Pharmacy School.

Ditto the Vet School that's only UF.

UF's Crim # 11 is probably halo.

Library Science is truncated...strange, FSU received lots of high marks there. Didn't you see them?

Pretty sure FSU does not have Physical Therapy...that's UF.

Creative Writing?

UF does not offer these programs:

Public Affairs

Social Work

Library Science

Out of over the 75 (+) rankings - FSU is only ranked higher in Political Science, Sociology, and Fine Arts. Whereas virtually every single program that UF offers is better than the one offered by FSU.

Also Creative Writing isn't ranked by US News.

how is electrical engineering rated?

The latest rankings of PhD programs per US News and World Report.

I list PhD programs and maybe other graduate programs because this is where the real talent and worth is at a university. The professors in such programs are generally senior, tenured faculty and have a lot to say and do concerning the academic programs and funding at the school. Further, grad students working under this senior staff will frequently be the instructors (or Teaching Assistants) for certain undergraduate classes. These grad students generally get their marching orders from the senior staff. To be a grad student, they have to have at least a BS degree in the field of study at hand and pass the GRE or GMAT exam with a fairly high score. They are no slouches in the brains or academic area, to say the least.

Now, about the ratings - for the typical layman (or undergraduate) there is no perceptible difference between a Physics program, for example, rated 5 in the US compared to one rated 105. The layman would not be able to explain why one program is better than the other and would generally begin to comprehend the differences only as a senior majoring in Physics.

This is one reason why ratings services are faulty - especially when consumed by the general public. To the layman, a Physics program Not Rated (NR) is so far above their (layman) level of comprehension it's not worth discussing or comparing. Any instructor with a BS in Physics, much less a PhD, from a major state university is one highly talented and skilled person. A rating of NR does not, therefore, mean the school is terrible in that area - at all. A lot goes into ratings, and a good bit is subjective or political in nature.

The HALO Effect - a school can have a Halo Effect (like an angel's halo) where because the school is liked for a certain reason(s) which influences the political part of ratings in a positive direction, even when the program does not deserve the positive rating. A school can also have an Inverse Halo Effect, where the program(s) get rated down, because of a negative attitude towards the school, which is generally undeserved and political in nature. In short, academia can be very rough and unfair.

This does not mean, however, that an undergraduate will receive a poor education, by comparison with the other school. Much, probably most, depends on individual work effort and attitude.

Key: Lower is better; NR = not rated. All scores national ratings.

You forgot 2 very important programs. The Master of Business Administration and Graduate Degrees in Engineering are Professional Degrees. How is FSU ranked in these programs? Wouldn't you also agree that these two programs are probibly the most important overall (with the exception of medicine & law).

Who cares about what FSU is ranked compared to UF. They aren't even in the same league. Joe isn't it kinda pointless to argue with the Nole.

FSU and UF are not in the same league? Right, tell that to the 4 UF grads that I have working for me. I actually think that my UCF employees do a better job than my UF employees. Then again, what do I know, I'm just a nole ;)

"FSU and UF are not in the same league? Right, tell that to the 4 UF grads that I have working for me. I actually think that my UCF employees do a better job than my UF employees. Then again, what do I know, I'm just a nole"

I personally would not brag about getting an MBA from FSU. Honestly do you guys even require the GMAT for your online degree?

can't we all just agree to settle it this november on the football field, where it really counts?

You can tell GatorDan is an actual student at UF.

Funny thing about the FSU/UF rivalry, over the years the most vitriolic fans never even attended or graduated from either school, in my observation. The vast majority of real UF alumni and students are fine folk, of whom I have many friends. I'm sure UF alumni could say the reverse.

Good luck with your studies, Dan, remember to have fun. College is a blast.

hell yes I will, I'm an incomming freshman and have some good friends going to FSU, and even more going to UCF and CC and other "lower" colleges. I've done my share screwing up in high school, and know that just because I'm going to a "better" school doesn't make me better than anyone else. There are numerous reasons someone may choose one college over another, just as I chose UF over Emory, a "better" school. What matters is what you do after school.

Of my friends there are people who I consider smarter than the UF students, but for whatever reason are going to a different college. When it comes down to it, what matters is what you do after school if you want to consider sucessful, whether that be raising a family or running a fortune 500 company. The school doesn't make the person, the person makes the person, and judging someone by saying you "wouldn't brag" about an FSU MBA is stupid, it's all about the person. Yes, UF students as a whole have higher stats than FSU students, but that does not make them in any way better or more sucessful in the long run. I know some people attending UF who may be hard working, but I would not consider them intelligent or in the long run sucessful at all, just as I know people at community college who are bright but for whatever reason are taking 2 years at home. FSU is a fine school, at least on par with UF in most respects, but what it comes down to is the people, and you have to judge people based on their choices and what they do with their life and not because they made a different choice as far as what school to do. But as I said before, that doesn't mean I don't think we are still a better football team than FSU, you guys suck in that reguard. (all due respect)

Sorry if I'm rambling, I just got home from a party and I'm a little buzzed, something I have a feeling I'll be feeling alot more of up at college.

GO GATORS

soo..just curious..how did you get home?

my friend drove my car to my house where another friend picked her up...is that ok with you?

only because I don't know you :/

Gatordan,

Underage drinking is only going to get you in trouble. Now that you're most likely 18, you're an adult (in the eyes of the law), and will be treated as such by the police.

Don't go there...it's not a happy place.

Good luck!

I don't need to brag about getting an MBA from FSU, but I will brag about having UF MBA grads working for me. What does that say about your "elite" school? Not much. Gatordan seems to be only rational gator in this forum, who's not living in fantasy land. Holding a degree from FSU, UF, UCF, USF, UM etc.. does not make a difference in the real world. Many of my close friends attended UF,some are doing fine and some are not. The UF grads who work for me are doing fine, mostly because an FSU grad decided to give them a chance to prove themselves.

Comparisons of schools are, for better or worse, based on statistical averages. On that score, UF is generally regarded as the better school. It does not follow logically, however, that general statistics apply to specific individuals....but it seems many people think that by going to the "higher ranked" school they somehow are "better" than the students at the lower ranked one. This, of course, is not true and is clearly demonstrated in the job market as a whole, where plenty of graduates of "3rd tier"...and below...graduates can rightly excel.

Of a personal level, I learned that lesson when I took my MIT degree and got thoroughly embarrassed by my first boss....a lowly 'Bama grad...who had no problem outperforming me in every meaningful aspect of my job....and is a man I still try to emulate to this day.

There is no question that there are FSU grads that are better than many Harvard grads in many areas. The standard deviations of individual performance greatly exceeds the differences attributable to the school. Still, people like to compare and rank schools...they just shouldn't take it so seriously. By the standard measures, UF is superior to FSU. Does it really matter on an individual basis? No.

FSU MBA,

I want to apologize for my earlier comment. It takes dedication to get a MBA from any institution, and what truly matters is the success that one actually achieves in their career. Please understand that tempers have been flaring lately on CC, and I got sucked into a nasty debate.
