I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science in May 2012 from a small university in metro Atlanta and still cannot find a job. I have been looking for more than six months and don't know what to do. I have applied for everything, including Best Buy, Burger King, etc and still cannot find anything. I don't know to do. I want a job using my degree but don't have any experience. I tried volunteering for relevant things but only found things that involve tutoring, etc (which I am currently doing). But I cannot find a real job. Any things you guys would recommend?

Also: I was not able to secure an internship in college or find a job (I tried but could not get anything). Also, I need advice on something that I can do now.

So… part of your problem with job hunting now is that you did not have any jobs or internships in college. It is very difficult these days to get an entry level job out of college if you did not do those things. So you are starting well behind other graduates.

Regarding the fast food type jobs, you probably look overqualified to them. Seriously, you might need to take your college degree OFF your resume to get those jobs (but you can’t lie on the applications). Volunteering is harder now that the election cycle is done, but you are living in the capital of your state. Contact your state senator or state representative (not the national ones, the state ones) and ask if you can volunteer in their office. I pretty much guarantee that they will take you on. You might have to work in something else (eg, retail) for a while, though, while you build experience.

Thanks for the advice. I will be doing that. Also, I was considering moving even… I was thinking another state would create more opportunities.

Thoughts:
- Get certified to substitute teach. Any college grad can do this, it’s income, it’s work experience, you might enjoy it.

2) Spend an insane amount of time on LinkedIn. Find out every single recruiter at staffing agencies in your area, and send each of them a resume. (This is the most important thing that you can do, by far) … be willing to accept any temp office job. (Ajilon, Accountemps, the list is endless of staffing agencies)

3) Apply to the car rental agencies (Hertz, Enterprise, RentACar). Pays about $32k. They hire a ton, it’s pretty un-fun work, but it’s real work experience. They’ll hire college grads from any major. … Do well there, and in a few years you can be making $60k+ (still working tons of hours / weekends, though).

4) Get computer programming skills. Teach yourself C++. Seriously.

5) Go abroad and teach English in a random country. Middle Eastern countries pay well. Google ‘Dave’s ESL job cafe’.

6) HAVE A SPECIFIC GOAL! … figure out what job you really want to do, and then do everything possible to get that job.
