graduated in2011....can't find a job

I graduated in. 2011 with a marketing degree. I had to take a break from college due to financial reasons so I couldn't finish in 2008a as planned. I found a job in 2009that and I've been working there since. I relocated last year to be around a more active social scene for people in their 20s, instead of the family oriented area that I grew up in. I've been on 3 interviews ...all sales jobs and I've gotten rejected.I'm frustrated because I can't find another job. I just don't know what to do. Advice?

You will need to go on a lot more than three interviews before you get a job. Marketing is a very difficult, competitive field right now. Get someone to review your resume, do mock interviews and really work on making yourself more marketable to employers. And apply to companies like it’s your job.

I’m thinking maybe I’m not a good fit for sales

Marketing isn’t the same thing as sales.

The job environment is very hard right now and you should feel a little better in that you’ve had interviews. There are those that apply to many more jobs that never get an interview.

Try to use your network (family, friends, school) to find positions where you may be a good fit.

I haven’t been successful in getting markting interviews, which is what I want. so I opted for sales. I’ve been networking, so hopefully it pays off soon. I really want to stay in the city where I am now, but its competitive. many people with degrees and not enough jobs

You need to be willing to branch out beyond one place. You are highly limiting your opportunities if you aren’t looking in a broad geographic area. As you said, it’s very competitive right now.

I moved to Juneau, Alaska (an isolated city of 30,000 on the Southeast coast) for an internship that turned into a job and a graduate program. I don’t regret it for a moment.

What’s more important to you: a social scene or a career?

+1 for polarscribe

Honestly, I would prefer a job over a social scene. It’s a very competitive world out there. Many people don’t have jobs … some can’t get interviews! (I have classmates in the latter position)

I know it’s not a great solution. But have you investigated internships and volunteer options? I’m not sure whether you left your job when you relocated. But if you are working during the day, look for opportunities available during evenings and weekends.

You’ll get real experience, new contacts, more success stories to tell during interviews.

Idealist website has loads of opportunities for interns and volunteers. Your local Craigslist, too.

See if your public library has a support group for job hunters. Make the librarian a friend.

Many people try sales and aren’t comfortable or successful. You have lots of company.

Don’t worry and try again & again. Do your best you will definitely get the job.*
