Graduated Uni, but have no idea what to do with my life

I'll try and make it brief. I'm 21 and graduated this summer, and have no idea what to do as far as work. I ended up with a 3.1 GPA(about a 3.4 last 2 years) in my Neuroscience and Psychology double major. Right now I'm in the process of applying to medical school and a couple clinical psychology grad programs, but to be honest my overall application for both is pretty bad. I have minimal ECs, a bad GPA, and to top it off I'm having problems with my references. My dad's a doctor, and paid for all of my undergrad, and has pretty much in different words been calling me a lazy bum, saying that I'm 21 living at home, with no job, not being motivated enough to work hard for a good job (missed a bunch of deadlines, made a bunch of mistakes) etc etc. The only way med school would be a realistic option would be to go back to school for a year or two and increase my GPA/improve application/etc. The same for the grad programs to a lesser extent.

I chose neuroscience as my second major because I knew psychology was kind of a fluff major without a lot of prospects unless you went the grad school route. I picked it cause I knew it would mesh well with the psych degree, but in hindsight I probably should have picked something easier and that could lead to more job opportunities after graduation.

So my question is this.. assuming I can't get into the grad program, what kind of jobs should I be trying to get? They don't necessarily have to be science/psych related either. What kind of jobs do people with only university degrees get?

Have you taken the MCATs or GRE? Get good LORs? Can you utilize the Career Center at your alma mater? You sound totally lost.

Med school with a 3.1 GPA? I have a 3.5 GPA and I doubt that I would get into medical school, young sir.

What were the mistakes that you made(Is there any way you could have increased your GPA- Even with the 3.4 your last 2 years I wouldn’t imagine that would be impressive to med school admissions)? Maybe you should retake courses and get better grades in the course?

It might even be best to take a year or two off and work to get a good LOR. And then apply to graduate school. It might also clear up your mind. Just make sure you do go back to graduate school(Although I’m sure your dad will remind you constantly of this!)

Maybe you really are lost and just need to clear up your mind. Living at home right after College isn’t the end of the world…but it does feel good to move out.

go be a neuroscientist lawlz

I’m pretty much in the same boat as you. I’m a psych major who graduated in March, did some traveling, came back expecting to find a job fairly easily but have been unsuccessful. I’m currently applying to programs for a Master’s in Public Health. Why don’t you look into that also? It’s definitely not as difficult to get into as clinical psychology or med school, but it’ll still provide useful skills that will guarantee a job.
