If I wanted to graduate high school early, how can I obtain credits faster?
Is there any California Education rule where I can skip on electives and take classes? My school doesn’t have a concurrent enrollment agreemental with any college. My counselors don’t know what they’re talking about. Any helpful advice about getting credits in the summer at a CC?
It’s not a good idea to graduate early. Instead, you should look into dual enrollment, which I’ll allow you you to enroll in community college for free and access a greater variety of classes, some of which would allow you to accelerate in a favorite subject.
Ive asked my school counselor about concurrent enrollment. She said the school offers concurrent enrollment, but it’s only the classes during summer break. Which isn’t the same thing! I want to take like 3-4 classes in hs then 2 or 3 at CC. But yeah, the counselor won’t work with me. She’s not willing to find me any opportunities I can hop on at any othee hs
It’s not your counselor’s job to find you opportunities – you should find them yourself.
First you say that your school doesn’t offer concurrent enrollment, then you say that your school will allow you to take CC classes during the summer. Which is it?
If you can meet all of your graduation requirements through CC and/or accredited online classes, would your school not issue a diploma? Perhaps if you can get your state flagship university to say that whatever college classes you want to take will satisfy their entry requirements for high school classes (my daughter did this for one of her electives), perhaps your hs will accept it. Are you in a public or private school?
Look at your student handbook. It’s rare that a student is allowed to enroll in community college in the summer only.
What state do you live in?
Well actually @LoveTheBard , high school counselors are supposed to find you opportunities… That is their job; they’re literally paid to do that. Also, I did find opportunities myself. I’m testing out of high school at age 15 and enrolling in college in the fall. I simply asked this question so I can earn class credit (which isnt really needed for my circumstances.)
@MYOS1634 I am currently living in California. I attend a public school. It’s extremely unorganized and it has a horrible learning environment. Teachers arent that great and students don’t do their work. Also, we don’t have a handbook - just a sheet of paper stating student agreement and the dress code.
I just really want to leave. I’ve attended private school for elementary and middle school. They taught me so well and they’ve over prepared me. I just feel like this school isn’t helping. This isnt arrogance. I just can’t help but feel like I’m wasting my life by staying in a classroom where we don’t learn anything
@KYDEGU Actually, it’s their job to make sure you complete your requirements and graduate, as well as to make sure that your college applications are taken care of. It’s not their job to figure out every possible opportunity outside of the regular curriculum for each and every student.
I’m sorry you’re not having a good experience in high school, and I’m glad you’re finding a solution.
Is there another public school you could attend ? Or a private school your parents could afford or that you could test into ?
In California dual enrollment is pretty common. Look at the pages on your local cc’s and perhaps your district.
What do you want to do after high school ?
Early graduation often hurts the applicant.
Do you have 4years of English including AP composition, math up to pre-calculus or calculus, foreign language to level 4or 5, 4units of social science/history including us history, 4units of science including bio, chem, physics?
