does anybody know how difficult it would be to do this? im considering trying to graduate a semester early for financial reasons, and i would be entering nyu next year with the maximum amount of credits they allow (32) from ap tests. thanks in advance!

With 32 credits (about one years worth) they may force you to graduate in three years. So yes its possible and hopefully you like it because you may not have a choice.

“Students are required to graduate within eight full-time semesters or after earning 128 credits (including accepted credits from Advanced Placement, Advanced Standing, and Transfer Student status), whichever comes first. Therefore, transfer students and freshmen students entering NYU with approved credits may be expected to complete degree requirements in less than four years, depending on the number of credit points received when entering the University.”

Lots of students who matriculate with significant AP credits are able to graduate a semester, or even a full year, early. It’s my understanding however, that you would not be “forced” to graduate if you have not fulfilled all the specific requirements of your major(s)/minor(s). If you are receiving financial aid you might want to check with them to see what their policy is as well.

My daughter entered NYU with 24 AP credits and is graduating a year early with a double major and a minor, but she also took 18 credits of summer classes to help accomplish that. She will end up with a total of 140 credits. She really got lucky in that three of her AP’s not only counted as general education credits, they actually fulfilled specific major requirements. It also helped that she knew from day one what she would be double majoring in, so each semester she was able to craft a schedule that advanced her progress toward completion of her majors and MAP requirements, with no “filler” courses. She even found a MAP World Cultures class that was countable for her minor!

Needless to say, you have to be really organized and know the requirements for each major/minor inside out. It also helps to establish a good working relationship with the administrator of the department(s) you are majoring/minoring in and clear your class choices with him/her so there are no unpleasant surprises at the finish line. You also won’t be able to “explore” the curriculum or change your major, but at NYU prices that is a small sacrifice.

i came into NYU with 21 credits and i will be graduating a year early. but im also taking summer courses.

but i guess it also depends on your major too… like how many of those credits will actually count for the courses that you need for your program of study. i lucked out too and the credits that i came in with gave me credit for the courses i need for my major.

Thanks for all of your responses! I am definitely going to do all I can to graduate early. From what you guys are saying it seems very feasible, and like a good way to go to nyu without burying myself in debt :)

Does anyone know which APs are accepted and how many credits each accounts for? I’m taking AP Lang, AP Stats, AP Physics, AP Calc AB and AP Gov this year, which one NYU (specifically, LSP & CAS) give credit for (and how many credits?) if I were to get a 4 or 5 on an exam?

Here is a link to the AP info from the current CAS bulletin. You’ll have to scroll down to the section titled “Advanced Placement Equivalencies” :

With AP credits and a full load over the two summers, our daughter will graduate from CAS in 2 1/2 years, also by being careful about taking courses for the proper credit. It can be done. But the summer courses must be paid for, so that part doesn’t necessarily save a lot of money.

Are summers at nyu the same cost as a full semester? Do you think I would have to take courses over the summer if I was just trying to graduate a semester early, or possibly a year? Some background info; I would want to major in english, and minor in politics and creative writing. I think I have aps that would take care of some of those credits (us gov, comparative gov, world history, ap lit) Thanks!

Oh, and I have more aps but those are the only ones pertinent to my major/minors :)

Rosesss: Summer tuition is charged per credit: $1,078/credit for CAS summer 2010, plus a registration fee and various service fees. There are two main 6 week sessions plus a couple of special 3 week intensive programs. Here is the link for CAS Summer 2010 rate info:

However, if you are matriculating with 32 AP credits, several of which are relevant to your proposed major and minors, I doubt you would have to take summer classes, unless you just want to. The reason my daughter took summer classes is because one of her majors (Romance Languages) required achieving advanced proficiency in two different foreign languages and it takes several semesters to progress through all those skill levels. Although she started at the advanced level in one language based on high school classes and AP’s, she was starting from scratch in her second language.

The best way to know if you can accomplish a major and one or two minors in 3 years is to study the relevant department websites and try to plot it out. Each department has its own website where you can learn about the program requirements for a major versus a minor, different possible “tracks” you can take within the major, and short descriptions of the standard course offerings. Here, for example, is the link for the English Department: [New York University > Department of English](http://english.fas.nyu.edu/page/home)
