graduation 2012

LA native here.

1/2 hour from LAX to USC is not a safe cushion. Dream, you’ve been lucky or as Zelda said, the shuttle had an advantage. Still, you need to leave more time for something this important.

Culver City to USC, because someone asked, is a great alternative. It’s not as close as downtown, but much closer than LAX and a straight shot on surface streets if the freeway’s bad. And you don’t have to deal with Hollywood. Just not sure which hotels are in CC.

NCmom, the water should absolutely not smell. Yikes!

LOL shreddermom, Zelda mentioned that she wouldn’t drink it on another post, so I thought it was normal! Stayed at that motel near USC for orientation and it was bad there too. Guess I need to upgrade my hotel choices!

Hahaha! I said I wouldn’t drink the water without filtering it…But for showers and everything, my LA water has been fine and smell free!

bbgg, I second that – hope s can find a job too.

I wouldn’t drink it either, mostly because I’m used to filtered/bottled water and now it tastes “funny” to me. (Note: I grew up on tap water in a pre-Evian world.)

But some years ago, a friend of of a friend, some kind of fancy scientist who works in the water “business,” told us our fears are completely unfounded and that there is absolutely nothing unhealthy about drinking LA tap water. Something about whatever bad that’s filtered out being less important than the good minerals going with it.

Basically those in the know laugh at us bottled water people.

My sister lives in the Bay Area and she said LA’s water comes from them. The water in the Bay Area is fantastic, sonshe is wondering what you Southern CA folks do to it after you get it! LOL!

I just called the Raddison hotel next to USC and found out they do have rooms available! They require a two night stay at approximately $260 per night. I’m going to look elsewhere since a two night stay is inconvenient for us. Good Luck everyone!

Yes, NC Mom, we Northern Californians love our Hetch Hetchy water from Yosemite. A former mayor once looked into bottling it.

Bbgg, if you want to stay in the Park La Brea area, about 3ish miles away, a USC grad student is trying to get a holiday rental business off the ground. We stayed there during orientation – great location, great price ($130/night for a two-bedroom) but the place was a teesny bit rough around the edges – the interior design borrowed heavily from the dorm look. If you’re interested, pm me for details.

NC Mom, I think the issue is not what we do with the water once we get it… but what happens to it on the way down.

Congratulations to all graduates!
Anyone knows if the students are required to attend a graduation practice?
-Need some suggestions of places to tour–consider I have never toured LA.

Just visited LA for the moving weekend several years ago and only saw the Sheraton Hotel and the university. Consequently, all those that have toured the area please feel free to suggest the “must see” places, museums–just will have the following days available (Many thanks):
May 10 (assuming there are no graduation activities)
May 11: Graduation
May 12:
May 13

Wait a minute… exactly which “shuttle driver” would that be??? Hopefully not the one with whom I am personally acquainted!

Golly! I can’t believe time has passed SO fast and graduation for Lamedaughter is almost here… It really seems like yesterday I was checking in here to see cc411’s posts and discovering the “trick” to see who was up for a scholarship.

^^^ Ah, alamemom. Good times.

;)

Can’t believe S1 is one semester away from graduation. At least I have S2 (freshman) to keep my Trojan parent skills up.

Can anyone give advice for dress code for parents and family for both baccalaureate and graduation? We are really looking forward to graduation for S1 next week! S1 got a job so that makes it even more joyful! Yippee!

^^I second that yippee to you and your S1, bbgg. Congratulations. Is the job in L.A.?

Lifelong west LA native: We are allowing 1 hour to get to campus and park. Yes…even with a handicap permit. When Ellebud 1 graduated it was 90 degrees…early in the morning!!! I hope that it is nicer for this one.

I still can’t believe that my daughter is graduating. It WAS yesterday when she “knew” she wouldn’t get in…and I knew she would. So much growth…for her. We spent a wonderful day together today. She said how much she would miss this time together when she works full time.

Trust me…I will miss it more…Although I do have lunch with my older daughter once a week, at least. And I’ll do the same with daughter 2. At least once a week…and dinners too.

I’m going to pet my dogs.

Yes he was very fortunate to be offered a software engineer job in southern California . We just found an apartment last weekend!
By the way, if it is really warm can spectators wear shorts to graduation or is it a very formal affair?

Dress to the weather. While I wouldn’t (as a parent) wear shorts, I’m sure some kids do…under the cap and gown. We saw families with mom and dad wear suits in 90 degree heat…and golf shirts with khakis on others. Daughters wore sundresses and very comfortable shoes.

Well I hope the May Gray drizzle we are having presently does not extend into next week.
Can’t believe 4 years has passed by so quickly!

Wow, checking back in after four years. Can’t believe it’s time to go to graduation in just a few more days.
