Graduation Speech Tryouts

I have graduation speech tryouts tomorrow and i am very nervous. Anyone got any tips in writing/delivering a graduation speech?

Be funny. Make fun of as many teachers as possible. End with F&*% Yeah!

Do all these and you've got it locked up.

Put in a lot of funny moments, include everyone, find a common link/joke and do only one line of sap.

Agreed. Humor is the key to a memorable speech. I'm a junior, but for some reason they make the choir sing at graduation every year and I've been forced to sit through more of those "carpe diem"-esque speeches than I'd be willing to count.

Don't stare at your paper. Project your voice: microphones only do half the work. Make your speech brief, maybe 4-5 minutes: last year's valediction went on for 15 minutes last year and we wanted to choke the breath from his body. It doesn't need to be original in subject (it'll probably be about change and college and transitioning anyway), but make it original in form. Put in an anecdote. And above all, make it funny, because nothing makes a three-hour ceremony worse than taking away one of the few chances for reprieve from the monotony that is graduation.

My valedictorian and class president are going to have 15 minute sermons on how track and wrestling--respectively--are just like life. I'm going to want to shoot myself by the end.

I've had the misfortune of sitting through 2 grads and reading 3 other grad speeches...

try to keep witty analogies to a minimum..."___ is just like life" speeches are HORRIBLE.

only 1 inspirational quote allowed!

try to mention current events that happened and the whole school did...ie, prom that rained out, etc, Katrina collections

don't make your speech just a summary of inside jokes with your small circle of friends. the salut at my school did this last year and her speech was PAINFUL!

make jokes if you're funny, or ask someone who's funny to write them. If you aren't funny, they'll be laughing AT you, not with you.

great example of a funny speech from someone graduating from ucsf:

I really REALLY dont want to do the val speech at my school. Unfortunately I'm gonna end up having to..
