Graduation Weekend at UNC

What is Graduation weekend like at UNC?

What happens, what goes on? Where? When? Anyone been there - can tell about that?

thanks

Anyone - any advice?

I have been to 4 of the last 5 commencements for various reasons (friends, my own, it’s also a pretty well-paying music gig if you can get it), so here’s what I can tell you: Commencement is held at ~10 AMish in Kenan Stadium and is about 1.5-2 hours long. If it rains, it is held in the Dean Dome with each student being allotted two tickets. Also, each department has a ceremony for its own students, you’ll probably need to ask whoever is graduating when/where their departmental ceremony is. Make sure to get a hotel early, I know the Carolina Inn has been booked for weeks. Usually there’s a pretty well known speaker…my freshman year it was Desmond Tutu, for my own commencement it was Michael Bloomberg, and for this year it’s Atul Gawande (he’s actually a pretty big name in my field). There will be a long line for pictures at the Old Well, so you may want to try to go a few days before/after commencement to get your pictures if you can. Ummmm…what else would you want to know?

Oh yeah, parking is a pain the day of commencement. You may want to see about taking a bus (there are free shuttle busses to campus from various spots in Chapel Hill).

Any suggestions for restaurants that take reservations? And thanks!

Top of the Hill, Carolina Coffeeshop, Spanky’s, Kipo’s, Maggiano’s (though this one is in Durham), the Lantern, Talulla’s, Squid’s, Cholanad

2 tickets to commencement? Whaaaat. :frowning: I wanted to go with my family. So its a ticket for me + 1 more?

It’s only 2 tickets IF there’s inclement weather and they move the ceremony to the Dean Dome. Otherwise it’s open seating in BKS for as many people as you want. And that’s you + 2 tickets if it’s raining.

It’s actually different this year … there is no indoor back up.

Commencement Weekend 2014 will be held on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11. The main University ceremony will begin at 9:30 Sunday morning, May 11, in Kenan Stadium. No tickets are needed and the ceremony is open to the public.

If showers are forecast, attendees should come prepared for wet conditions in the stadium. Umbrellas will be permitted, but guests should use caution when opening umbrellas and be mindful of those seated around them. If it rains, the ceremony will be shortened, but not relocated. If severe weather threatens and attendees’ safety is at risk, the ceremony will be canceled because there is no alternative site large enough to accommodate the expected 30,000 attendees.
