Grammar Help! (3)

The panda, (whose) Chinese name means "bear cat," (resembles) the cat (in) its ability (of contorting) its body into various shapes. (No error)

The answer D and I believe it should be fixed to (to contort). But what is this type of grammatical error is this called again?

A giant otter reclining on a riverside log is as regal, and as spellbinding, (as that of) any cheetah or tiger.
a) as that of
b) compared to
c) like
d) than
e) as

The answer is E. Why not A? (b c d are obviously wrong because they lack 'as')

That there (exist) an infinite number of worlds (outside) our solar system (were) first hypothesized (by the) sixteenth-century philosopher Giordano Bruno. (No error)

The answer is C. 'were' should be changed to 'was'. But what about A? Shouldn't 'exist' be changed to 'exists'.

1) idk but ur right
2) because the sentence is describing the otter itself, not the actual action in the river… Kind of tricky to explain. If it had said something like: "the otter’s actions…blah blah blah…AS THAT OF) then yes that is correct
3) example: “frogs exist” NOT “frogs exists”… Read the sentence as a whole and try to keep track of where it leads…the words “infinite number of blah blahs” make it plural. And for the “was” part, the first statement about that solar systems is a noun because it’s the actual theory that is talked about later in the sentence

I edited my post like 4 times so yeah

My explanation to two is kind of blurred sorry I don’t know exactly

ability + the infinitive ability to contort

Word Pair as…as

An infinite number…was

They’re testing you on prepositional idioms (like preoccupation…with, tendency…to, not only…but also)

What is “that” referring to in the sentence? Nothing…
The sentence is comparing “a giant otter” to “any cheetah or tiger”. It is a logical and appropriate comparison, so “E” is correct. “A” makes the sentence a little too awkward.

“exist” wouldn’t be changed to “exists” because the subject is plural. “an infinite number of worlds” is a plural subject, and therefore, should be followed by a plural verb.
The answer is C because “that” is singular in this sentence. Since there is only one idea after the word “that”, the verb should be singular.
