Grammar Question #2

Hello ,
I wanted to know when "Should"comes in a conditional clause , the second part takes "will" or "would"??
Thanks in advance

thank u but no , this is not what i meant …
I mean if the sentence is conditional (like conditional if)
ex) Should you be absent from school , you (will/would) miss many sessions???

It depends on which conditional case it is - first, second, or third.
In the first conditional - present simple … future simple : the present simple is replaced by " should be "
ex : If there is a power failure, the hospital will run on electricity from its own generator.
If there is = If there should be = Should there be
This question is a sentence improvement case in the the blue book, in the original question it contains a subject - verb disagreement, and the only correct form in the choices is : Should there be

so is (should …somthing ) always a first conditional ?
I came across an error identification sentence though i don’t remember the complete sentence but here it goes (should they melt , sea levels would rise worldwide) and it was correct. may u further explain?

No, that doesn’t mean that it’s always a first conditional.
I remember that example too, it’s in a real exam, i think may 2012 sunday.
Should in the case mentioned in the blue book, was a first conditional cuz the second part was fixed with no underline, and it contained " will. "
But should, as u had just shown in this example, can be used too in the second conditional cases.
No question will come giving u the choice between would and will if the first part contains should in the conditional form.
The example u mentioned was an identify-the-error question not an improvement one = U are not given two choices of using will or would.

  • The Summary cuz my words above are messed up :
Should can be used a first or second conditional. How to know which one is used ? U don’t have to cuz it can be used in both ways correctly. So u will never meet an improvement question that will ask u for example to choose between will and would.

Ok thank you so much
