Grammar question help!

Most of the books (around) this old house (smell of) mildew, and if you pick one up, you will find that the spine (has deteriorated) and (their covers have) rotted.

The answer in this question is D. Can someone give a technical explanation for this?

Quincy took Dan to Derek's home (for a visit), (never imagining) that five years (would pass) before (seeing) Derek again.

I thought it was no error, but it is actually D...I do not understand this answer one bit...

Thanks in advance!

Pronoun number error. The pronoun must agree with “one,” but it’s a plural (“their”) instead, so it’s wrong.

Modifier. It should say “before he saw,” because otherwise “seeing” is modifying “five years,” as if to suggest the years would pass before the years got a chance to see Derek again. Lame, I know.
