Grammar Question!

<p>Hey everyone :) </p>

<p>1) "Plants grown for their flowers should be treated with a low-nitrogen fertilizer because excessive nitrogen promotes the growth of leaves [at the expense of] flowers."</p>

<p>The correct answer is no error. </p>

<p>I was wondering why putting "the" infront of flowers wouldn't improve the sentence.</p>

<p>2) 29 At the reception were the chattering guests, the three-tiered cake, and the lively music that have become [characteristic] of many wedding celebrations."</p>

<p>This is also a no error. </p>

<p>Could someone please explain why characteristic should not be characteristics? </p>
