Grammar question

Is it grammatically correct to connect three independent clauses using the following sentence structure?

Independent clause*, and* independent clause*;* independent clause.

I would like the know the answer to this also. My instinct tells me that it's OK.

I believe that if you want to do that, this structure is generally preferred:

independent clause ; independent clause , conjunctive adverb independent clause.

Can anyone else explain the reason why? I'm having difficulty putting it into words at the moment.
