Grand Challenges Invites have been sent

My DD received an email today inviting her to accept the invitation to Tech's Grand Challenges program. Did anyone else receive it?

My DD is very excited to receive it. It significantly narrows down her roommate choices since all Grand Challenge students live together.

I got one too. How many people get invited? Could anyone provide more insight on the program and how it works? It seems like a relatively new program so I am worried it may be unestablished and the benefits of merit and extra connections might not outweigh the limited residence choice and extra work. Tech is already hard enough.

Daughter received the same invite. Still waiting to hear about Honors Program. Will have to make a decision if that happens. It does seem that Honors would offer more benefits, e.g. early class registration. Also, Grand Challenges students are housed in Howell, which looks like it is in serious need of renovation. If I’m wrong, please let me know.

I believe the magic number is 110 people invited into the program. My dd is in the program. The kids in this program tend to be outgoing and social and end up in many of the leadership positions around campus, as do the kids in the honors program. If you intend to apply for a peer leader position (like an RA), GC can be helpful as you’ll already have connections with the housing dept. I can’t really speak to which is better, but those two programs seem to be the movers and shakers among the freshmen. Howell isn’t too bad. Some of the rooms are pretty small. The guys are on the 1st and 3rd floors, and girls on the 2nd. FWIW, they do get little perks like having a 3D printer in the common room.

Hi all! I am a current GT student and member of the Grand Challenges Living Learning Community. I thought I might pitch in, in case you all would like a current students’ opinion. Grand Challenges is an awesome program. Were I to go back, I would chose to be a part of GC 10 times out of 10. I get a lot out of the classes (practical knowledge, problem solving strategies, networking, etc.), I am extremely close with the other students (they are a second family to me), and I am crazy about my project (I.e. The “Grand Challenge”). The dorm is pretty great. It’s on East Campus, which is very convenient. As far as the time commitment goes, I’ll use myself as an example. I am in GC and also involved in the following: a freshman leadership organization, a research lab, Society of Women Engineers (chairwoman), Faculty Engagement Club (VP), have a job, and take significantly more than the average course load. I am very busy, but I like it that way. GC is am amazing opportunity that I would recommend to anyone. Also, if you or your child/potential student is ever visiting campus, let us know! You may be able to sit in on one of our classes, meet some of the students/advisors, and tour the dorm. I hope this was helpful!

My daughter is a member of the Grand Challenges group. It has been a extremely positive experience for her. The group is a very impressive collection of domestic and international students. They become very close, like a family from all over the world. The fact that the group lives and studies together is a huge plus. The GC instructors and the program director are available and involved with the group on a daily basis. They have been wonderful resources for my daughter. The dorm is in a nice location, and close to key campus facilities. The GC group is my daughter’s on-campus family and support network. Students don’t have to go further than the in-dorm study lounge to find a study group or technical knowledge. I highly recommend the program.

Is an invite required to participate in GC? Is it too late to apply?

it’s too late to apply
