Check out the headline in today's Cavalier Daily. Not what every parent hopes to see when mentioning the off grounds residence (no not D's actual apartment unit) of their child. Pretty scary stuff.

Here’s the link.

Sound like a precursor to a meth lab in an off-campus apartment building. Or maybe they were just chemistry students doing an experiment?

I actually thought of you, John, when the story broke. I remember you posting that your D lived in that building.

Glad no one was hurt.

D does live in that building. I have an email in to her now to find out more information and to find out whether the tenants were evacuated. I only hope this incident makes GrandMarc more vigilant in screening its tenants. While I worried about the railroad track crossing safety issue near GrandMarc, the adequacy of the lighting in the indoor garage, and the overall security in the building, a meth lab, if that was what was involved, never entered my thoughts.

Me either, I was too busy trying to understand that 30 page lease that had to be signed on every page.

What the sad thing is, is that GM does “inspections” of units during breaks to check for damages/repairs/change filters/etc. How the heck they missed this one is insane.
Second sad thing? I came back late that night to find firetrucks and hazmat suited guys running around. A bunch of people on the street knew it was a methlab right then and there. How they knew is beyond me.
Hopefully GM is going to take some serious action with this. It’s scary to think an actual meth lab was going on in the building, as you hear about these things exploding all the time. It’ll be interesting to watch what happens in the next few weeks. JohnRoss and I will try to keep everyone updated if they wish.

Thanks shoe I’d appreciate it.

I understand from my D that the tenants were evacuated for a short time at about 1:00 a.m.

Sorry to post this information but I am told (but can not verify) that the tenants involved with the offending lab are two fourth year Chemistry majors.

Re: Evacuations: not everyone was evacuated for some reason. The apartments surrounding the offending apartment were evacuated (people basically were told “there’s a meth lab near you, get your valuables and get out”), but the entire building was not, nor was there any fire alarm or anything. It kind of bugs me that they failed to notify the community at that point, as even if they thought it was safe, my roommates and I would have walked the 10min down the Corner to the Marriot, knowing our parents would fully pay for the room in support of us (or get GM to). I think they failed when they waited until the next morning to disclose what happened.
This still irks me a bit. GM is not a cheap place to live, and I picked it because of the door locks, security guard, lit parking garage, etc. Now with this, I have a feeling a lot of people are going to challenge them to cancel their lease for this year/next.

GM’s out was really easy to find I only had to flip two pages.

Article 14 “SAFETY”

Neither we nor the Manager, … will be liable to you or any of your guests for injury, damage or loss to person or property caused by criminal conduct of other persons including theft burglary, assault, … or other crimes.

It goes on in caps to say… You indemnify the GM for just about everying.

at the end section F. We are not liable to your or your guests for injury, damage, loss of property from any cause including…fire, smoke, flood, water leaks…or interuption of facilities,

This is only the first few pages. I’m sure there is more. They cover their butts well.
