DS' grandparents want to pay for his dorm for his first year; the amount mentioned was $5K. I believe this will cover all of his dorm charges and leave a little bit left to go toward the meal plan. What is the best way -- for convenience as well as for FAFSA or tax purposes -- for them to do this? Write a lump-sum check directly to the school? Thanks for the info.

I think it’s best for the GP to “gift” the money to the parents and then the parents “pay” for the dorm.

Thanks, 'rent and mom2. I read through that other thread and came to the same conclusion that mom2 said – have the grandparents write the check to me, and then I’ll write one to the school.
