Grant Renewal

How good is CMU at renewing grants? My son is accepted to SCS and has a decent aid offer, mainly grant money. Is it likely to be renewed as long as our financial situation doesn't change? I assume grant money is solely based on financial need.

I think that grants are typically renewed- no one I know has complained about their financial aid packages changing significantly after freshman year.

Ours was reduced a bit last year, and tuition went up, so we ended up paying a bit more overall. EFC went up a small amount so that was probably what triggered it.
Haven't heard yet this year.

Thanks for your help. He is still trying to decide. CMU gave the least aid, but is the school he most wants to attend. Our EFC was just corrected downward. Will the schools review the new report and possibly add additional aid, or is it too late for that?

It's possible, but unlikely- call and ask. CMU isn't particularly good about redoing financial aid packages in the students' favor in the middle of the year once they've enrolled, unless there are really big changes; I don't know about redoing packages at this point. Since they are probably still hearing appeals, it may be possible to get addtional aid.

this may be a stupid question but i recently got an ok grant from CMU that was purely merit b/c my EFC was really high (it was a freak year, next year's efc will be much lower).
If my efc decreases significantly next year so much so that I suddenly go from needing no need-based aid to needing almost 16-17k in aid, do I get need based aid plus the merit grant (so that i pay less than efc) or merit + need-based aid and end up paying only efc. I guess my question is, can I get the same grant as well as need based aid. Does neone have any experience with this.
