Grants & Scholarships

I’ve been accepted but as expected with college, I need money. So let’s help each other out. What are some good sites/sources for scholarship and Grant opportunities? Also, what are some that you’ve been awarded? Also, feel free to comment your interests and academic standings so we can all refer each other to some good scholarship and grant opportunities. Let’s help each other get this money

What school were you accepted to?

@“Yellow BFA” the best scholarships are awarded by the colleges to which a student is accepted. The exceptions would be things like Questbridge, and some of the other highly competitive high profile national scholarships. But the deadlines for 2017-2018 have passed on those anyway.

If you need a substantial amount of money to attend college, I hope you have been accepted to a place that is affordable.

Outside scholarships seldom are renewable, and also aren’t usually for huge sums.

In addition, outside scholarships will reduce any need based aid you may receive…because your need will be less.

How much do you need to attend college? Are you really a BFA student? If so, most scholarships you would receive would be based on the strength of your audition.

Where do you hope to go to college? Hoping it’s not NYU.

@Madison85 @thumper1 UTC & UTK
I just posted a little about me on the post

What are UTC and UTK? I’m sure folks from your neck of the woods know what those letters stand for. I don’t!

Did you receive any financial aid from these schools yet?

How much do they cost, and how much aid do you need to attend?

What is your FAFSA EFC?

Did these acceptances require a review of your portfolio? Did you receive a merit award?

@thumper1 The university of Tennessee Chattanooga (MOCS) and the University of Tennessee Knoxville (VOLS). They don’t require a portfolio review. You enroll as Per-Art for UTC and for UTK there is a Sophomore portfolio review at which you will be evaluated on your work and give an oral presentation. Why don’t you recommend NYU? Just curious :slight_smile:

NYU costs $72,000 a year. The school does NOT meet full need for all accepted students. If you are looking for significant aid…or a low net cost…NYU is not a good place to shop.

Are you instate for TN? Is this school affordable for you?

How much aid do you need to attend?

NYU costs $72,000 a year I believe and is not that generous with aid.

Did you file a FAFSA, do you know your EFC?

^here are the net price calculators for UTK and UTC. Ask your parents for 2015 income and current asset information and it can give you an idea what kind of aid you might qualify for.

@mommdc What does EFC stand for? And yes I’ve filled the FAFSA.

@mommdc I want to pursue UTK. It’s a better college and better in terms of my Major. I filled out their general application for scholarships today. I just want to be sure that I’m not in deep debt you know.

After the FAFSA processes you should get an email that you can view your SAR, student aid report.

You log back into the FAFSA and your SAR should be there to view.

It should list the EFC (estimated family contribution), it is a number that if low enough can qualify you for federal grants like the Pell grant, and maybe state grants.

@thumper1 I’m an in state student. It’s roughly $29,000 for the cost of attendance for UTK. I’m also trying to decide if it will be better for an apartment or on campus.

You can only borrow $5500 freshman year. What is your FAFSA EFC? How much can your parents pay each year for 4 years? Can you live at home and commute to either school if necessary? ACT score?

What is your GPA, and SAT or ACT score?

Are you low income? Does TN have specific grants for low income students?

Have you discussed college financing with your parents? If not, do so now. If so, what have they told you they can pay per year for you to attend college?

@thumper1 GPA: 4.0
ACT: 21 (waiting on December scores, UTK super scores
EFC: 000000

@Madison85 my ACT is 21. I’m waiting on December’s scores. My EFC is 000000

@mommdc my EFC is 000000
