Hey guys. I've been accepted to UNC Regular Decision, and I'm sure I'm not the only person who got a booklet regarding living at Granville Towers. However, I was wondering, is this a Room and Board option at UNC, or do you have to pay separately? Is it more expensive? How much more? Or is it included in Room and Board? Essentially, please expand on the less than informative information in the package. Thank you.

Silly - if you click on search this forum, upper right of the board …and put “granville” in and search the threads …there are LOTS of posts about Granville that you might find helpful.

Granville does cost extra and is separate from all the other dorms at UNC. The extra cost does depend on which type of room you choose and whether or not you choose to bring a car, so it probably costs around $600-$1,000 more. From what I can tell, most people who stay in Granville are kind of grouped off from people who stay in regular dorms, as Granville has its own meal plan which doesn’t apply to Rams Head or Lenoir.

There are multiple threads on Granville. Here are links to some of them:

Definitely DO NOT live at Granville unless you are planning on going Greek. Otherwise I guarantee you’ll hate it like the rest of us.

I’ve said this many times before…My S live at Granville, is not Greek, and loves living there. You don’t have to be Greek.

I lived at Granville, didn’t go Greek, and loved it there. Granville is a blast and is in one of the best locations on campus.

It’s good if you want to party. If you want to be surrounded by all the rich, white kids on campus, then go to Granville. I think that it is largely a place for the underachievers at UNC. Also, I’m never able to sleep at night or do work in my room. Complaining has done nothing. Management here is awful.

^

Once again, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Of my friends from Granville that have graduated already, two are in top 10 law schools right now and two more have 4.0 GPAs at UNC.

^ There are certainly very bright students in Granville, undeniably, but from my experience, the majority are very Greek focused and partying focused (that’s not to say that someone who’s Greek isn’t a good student, it’s just a part of their extracurricular life). As a whole, however, Granville’s environment isn’t one that I’d find, personally, to be academically stimulating or conducive to being a 4.0 student at Carolina, but to each her own.
