I’m mostly likely coming to UNC next fall. When i visited a few weeks ago, i personally was not a fan of the south campus suite style living and thought that granville was more for me. A few questions about granville that i was hoping for people to answer for me.

I’m coming from the northeast and is granville more or less instate

Is granville really all private school north carolina kids

Whatever other opinions you have about granville

Are the south campus dorms really that social(cuz i didnt see them as being social due to the suite style)

Go back and look through the archives, there was a considerable amount written about Granville last fall.

Since you are an OOS student I HIGHLY recommend that you DO NOT live in Granville because most of what you have perceived about Granville is true. There are also many more reasons for you not to live there which the archives will clearly point out.

I agree totally with eadad. We have both read posts from other OSS who had issues with Granville. I would recommend you choosing north campus housing Connor or any around that quad, Kenan, then on south campus try to get the directionals which are newer..... South, North, etc. If you happen to end up in Hinton James, never fear. They have a lot of fun, too much for many....so you will have plenty of options. Try to find a roommate on roommate finder, another OSS would be good for you....Good luck.

I agree with eadad and Altmom about Granville. I know many people who love it there, but they are all in state and tend to be Greek.

There are a lot of different dorms on south campus, and I do think many of them are very social. Not all of them are suite-style if you don't want that configuration.

(I personally live on north campus and love it -- near classes and less noisy each night yet still a great community of fun people.)

Yep its between south and granville. The thing for me is that I come from a private school. When i visited i personally thought Granville was perfect for me because coming from out of state, i felt that the kids in granville would be more of my type.

Essentially can someone just generalize the differences between granville kids and south campus kids?

My daughter lives in Granville Towers and loves it. She did not go greek and never will. Everyone says that the only reason people live there is to go greek - not true. Three other people that she went to high school with live there and none of them went greek and no she does not hang with these high school friends very much. It is a mixture of in state and out of state - granville could give you a better idea of the number. She said the food is better at granville then on campus. The cafeteria at granville does a lot of special things during the year for them. Valentine's day they had a food bar with only chocolate food - she is it was amazing. The fix steak dinners each month for the people with birthdays that month. Before exams they fixed prime rib for them and had a person there to give massages. They have late night dining too which you can take back to your room, which is real nice. They have had a bingo night, casino night, talent night, and a foam pool party at the first of the year - these are the only ones I can think of. She has an expense account on campus so she can eat on campus when she needs to. She would have also liked living on campus as well - south or north. There are also a lot of nice dorms on campus. The walk to classes from granville is very easy. There is not a lot of differences between south campus kids and granville kids. I know a lot of people will say these people like to party and go greek. Believe me they party on south campus just as much. My daughter lives in the east tower which is suppose to be the quiet dorm - not true always. I believe you will be happy wherever you decide to stay.

If you do go Granville, I would recommend living in the quiet tower. The other towers, trust me on this, are partying constantly. Constantly. As for the cafeteria, I've heard mixed reviews, but Lenoir actually does a lot of those things - for Valentine's we had a chocolate fountain with fresh raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and I'm probably forgetting what else. Those free massages do sound pretty tempting, though.

Cloying, are there really plenty of freshmen on north campus? The way people talk it seems like everyone will be on south campus. I kind of like Alderman, but is that out of the way for a freshman?

South Campus dorms will have a higher % of first-year students in them. My hall (on north campus) is all first-year guys, but I also know one person on North Campus who is surrounded by juniors and seniors and felt somewhat isolated because of it until she met people in surrounding dorms, through student groups, etc.

Basically, South Campus provides more certainty of having younger students and North Campus provides more certainty of having nice housing (AC, proximity to classes, etc.).

Why only South or Granville? I live in Central and we got those free massages around exam time too... The chocolate bar for Valentine's in Ramshead was awesome and every girl that walked in was handed a rose by a man in a suit so it's not like we don't get festive meals on campus. They also had shrimp cocktail and all kinds of nifty things but I barely ever eat in the dining hall since I don't have a meal plan this semester.

My dorm also has cool activities like a rave, game nights, breakfast for dinner nights and a barbecue at the beginning to the year to get to know other people in the community. Wherever you live on campus is what you make it. Every kid from my high school that lives in Granville can be considered preppy and those of us that live on campus are quite content where we are. It's all personal preference in the end.

well only south or granville because im a freshman and those are the top 2 locations for freshman. Well i consider myself preppy but its just like granville seems better but im just worried about the people there while south campus seemed less desirable but everyone says that its where a typical out of stater from new york should go(or just an OOS in general).

wolfpack - Alderman is wonderful. I know several freshmen in there right now, I live in the neighboring dorm to it, Kenan. When I was making the choice as to where to go I was really scared that I'd be in the situation that ThoughtProvoking was describing, but it turned out really well for me, actually. My hall has a bunch of freshmen girls, and with Cobb (kind of a mecca for honors freshmen this year) around I really have never had the thought that I wish there were more freshmen around me. I actually like having upperclassmen around because they can help out with choosing professors, etc. If you want to be absolutely surrounded with freshmen, though, south campus is nice. :)

The only place where I'm glad that I'm not living is Granville, to be honest, I just don't really like the vibe and it's way farther from classes than I am living on north. My main point in writing all this is that you should feel excited about where you might live, not scared like I was! It's wasted energy as I'm sure you'll be happy on south, north, mid, or hey, even granville.

Thanks...I really like alderman, the dorms are soo nice, and I prefer hall style to suite style. I just want that "real freshman experience". Not even entirely sure if I'll pick UNC yet though, I like duke and state as well.

random question:

how close is the cats cradle? and without a car will it be a pain finding transportation? I plan on seeing 2-3 shows a month.

well im not exicted about any of the living situations to be honest, really only issue with the school for me because as of now im like 90 percent sure im going to UNC.

I wasn't aware they kept all the 'preppies' at Granville. ;) (JK).

gijon - My d lived on South her freshman year and enjoyed the experience.....but was ready for North campus after a year of South. She is also in Kenan and loves it; has already recontracted with her roomie for next year. Kenan, Alderman and the like, to ME, aesthetically seem more homey. Don't get me wrong, the new dorms on South are beautiful, but they have a more institutional feel than the historical dorms on North. And there is definitely a good blend of freshman, sophomores and upperclassmen in the North campus dorms as cloying points out. So, don't rule it out.

I agree. My dorm feels more like a hotel than a dorm - and its lobby really brings that home.

From my dorm, Cat's Cradle is like a ten to twenty minute walk, which really isn't so bad. It's just a straight shot down Franklin. I'm glad I didn't have a car this year, it'd have been more of a burden than a help. Public transportation around the area is superb and free.

i sort of just want the true freshman experience which in my mind is a dorm with a bunch of freshman running around meeting each other etc.... and i feel that won't happen at North Campus. However, in my mind Granville seemed like the place where that would happen, but i hear from some people how its all north carolina private school kids who have known each other forever, and from others that its no different.

Hmm. Well, I remember that that did happen for me on North campus. They had a bunch of events to bring us all together, and there are actually a ton of freshmen on North, especially in my community (Spencer moreso than Kenan, but my dorm still has a bunch of freshmen). But, if you want a 100% guarantee of running into a freshman where ever you go, then south is where you want. South South South. I think I'm probably repeating myself so I'll lay off this thread for awhile. :)

As I said in an earlier post and via PM, please look back through the CC archives for what seemed like a WHOLE thread that was devoted to a very unhappy OOS student living at Granville last fall. You may need to do a Granville search but you will find it.

All that I and others are trying to do is issue fair warning. While I certainly respect the opinions and advice that alcook4u has offered on these boards since they (can't remember if man or woman, sorry) have been here, their comments have also been among , if not the only comments that are positive regarding the Granville experience for an OOS student that have been posted here in the four or so years that I have been on these boards.

Whether you live in a north or south campus dorm is going to have far less of an impact on your first year experience than being in a place that is almost full of pre-existing friendships and those intending to go Greek.

We ALL just want you to be happy with your choice of schools and to have the best first year experience that you can, At Granville is it far more of a potentially loaded dice roll than in playing dorm roulette, that's all.

Granville spends a lot of marketing money and when my S was in the process it certainly had my attention as well. We listened to the advice of another student from my son's school who was a senior at UNC who strongly advised against Granville for all the reasons I and others have stated and stayed with the dorms and he was much happier and better off in the long run.
