I just applied to Granville as I heard it fills up quickly. My sister was there freshman year and said if you want to party, go West tower and if you want to study, go one of the others.

She was in West and said it was hard to find quiet time to study and when I visited there last year the fire alarm got pulled (I hear that happens every weekend). I want to have fun my freshman year but I am wondering if I really wont be able to study.

Also, what is the party scene like at Granville?

Also…no posts along the lines of “you shouldn’t be worried about the party scene and should just study to set yourself up for life yadda yadda, etc, etc”

Granville’s application is separate, and comes out at a different time.

Anyway. My cousin went to Carolina in the 90s and lived in Granville all 4 years, and loved it. She said its generally people who aren’t quite as serious as school as they are about partying, but she liked that atmosphere. Everyone on here says don’t go Granville if you’re OOS, but I don’t really feel like it would be that big of a deal…There will definitely be lots of partying going on, but I can’t speak as to how much studying goes down either.

Since we have started the annual Granville Towers thread, let me start.

I don’t recommend Granville for OOS students. For the most part it is filled with in state kids with established friendships who plan to go Greek. I know that sounds like a broad generalization but for the last six years that hasn’t been too highly disputed on these boards.

Two years ago there was an extensive thread by an OOS student bemoaning the fact that he had made a terrible mistake by living in Granville and was making no friends. In fairness, I think a big part of it was him because nothing anyone recommended to him was a good enough answer, but Granville certainly exacerbated the situation for him.

There are numerous threads in the archives about Granville, for those thinking about living there, check them out.

With the exception of this one OOS student on here, everyone I know personally who’s lived in Granville absolutely love it. I know 5 people living there right now, and they have nothing but good things to say about it. Out of those 5 people I know in Granville, 2 ended up going Greek. Yes, a lot of people there do pledge, but from what I can tell, if you don’t, you’re not in a total minority.

Definitely read the previous threads about Granville. I think I’m going to be considering it if I don’t get into a living-learning community, although from what I’ve heard, that’s unlikely.

After you fill out the form, Granville will send you lease papers in the mail within 2 days. I filled out the online application on Sunday and got my papers on Thursday. Sucks, though, that my parents are making me wait on a decision from another college before I can pay my enrollment fee to Chapel Hill… I need to “explore my options” or some mess like that. Hah! So, I can’t send in my lease papers until I’m 100% positive about Chapel Hill or I’ll owe Granville a great deal of money. Anyhow, it doesn’t mention anything on the lease papers about selecting a tower, either. I think that they just choose this based on your answers to the “housing preference” form.

yeah…i had a small conflict with colleges and decided unc was where i wanted to be. some of those questions were weird and i hope they throw me in west tower!

The food, the location, the parking, the pool, and the social life, for starters. Probably the best place to live at UNC when I was there. Not sure if that’s changed over the past year since UNC owns Granville now.

yeah i heard about that…not sure what that will spell for granville’s future. my sister said the food was really good which I found awsome. I thought part of college was consuming terrible food

hey ok so i’m basically in the same boat…about granville vs. regular housing.

first, is it true that granville is now ‘on-campus’ or whatever and that if I decide to go back through regular housing for my sophomore year priority isn’t an issue?

also, i was wondering if you guys would recommend granville for me, considering:
i’m in state, and from a private school. but,
i’m extremely liberal (i only say this because going to a fairly conservative private school for 6 years has really really bothered me)
i’m not a big fan of the preppy/conservative/snobby scene.

i’m not saying all that in opposition to granville…believe it or not I actually really want to live in granville because it seems like a really nice option, + the good food, and also i’m really interested in a single room (suite thing) but i know that as a freshman you can’t get single rooms in south campus.

anyways sorry ericmodify for leeching onto your post…granville seems pretty chill and fun but i’m really having a hard time with this dorming situation.

oh and for anyone who thinks (i’ve gotten this a few times) that unc may not be the place for someone like me, i can only say that i actually liked it the few times i’ve been… and with so many people i’m thinking i’ll find my niche. and i did apply to other schools (Brown is my top choice) but expenses force me to look at UNC, which i don’t mind.

Even though UNC now owns Granville it does it does not appear to be a part of Carolina Housing. I am guessing that, like in the past, if you select Granville you are not part of housing for subsequent years’ seniority purposes and would be at the bottom of the list if you tried to get back into U Housing the next year.

Checked with UNC Housing. Granville is not owned by the University but a “UNC Entity”. That being said - UNC Housing requires all 1st years to live in either Granville or traditional on-campus housing.

The Housing director said they do not penalize any student for living in Granville their 1st year. When it comes to “on-campus” housing the following year - i.e. A sophomore is a sophomore in terms of housing priority.

Hope this helps clarify Granville - my “S” will likely be staying there his 1st year.
