I want to major/focus/concentrate (whatever it is) in graphic design/visual communications/digital design (anything related) at a university/liberal arts college (or a joint program with an art school). This makes my list very small and have found few universities that have this. Can anyone compare the Duke, Penn, Michigan, Syracuse, and BU programs, or any other universities with a graphic design related program of some sort for that matter? I've asked this question a couple times, but I'd really like to exhaust this topic in this forum because I would feel more comfortable with as many choices as possible. Thanks.

Some broad universities that have excellent graphic design majors include: Brown (you’d do a dual degree with RISD, across the street), Yale, Virginia Commonwealth, Carnegie Mellon, North Carolina State U, U Illinois Urbana - and those are actually some of the top graphic design schools in the US. Maybe some of them are worth considering, for you?

Other schools I might have you look into, which offer one or more of the specific majors you mentioned (sometimes, hidden as a concentration under a broader art major, so look closely) include Tufts (dual degree with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston), Northeastern (dual degree with the SMFA Boston), Emerson (dual degree with the SMFA Boston), BU, Syracuse, Temple, UCLA, U Southern California, Drexel, U Iowa, Arizona State U, Indiana U Bloomington, NYU, UC San Diego, Rensselaer Polytechnic, Bard, Columbia U, U Wisconsin Madison, U Texas Austin, U Illinois Urbana, U Georgia, Washington U in St. Louis, Ohio State Columbus, UC Davis, U Washington, Rutgers New Brunswick, U Arizona, UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, U Michigan Ann Arbor, U Penn, Cornell, Southern Illinois U Carbondale, U New Mexico, New North Texas, U Tennessee Knoxville, SUNY New Paltz, Stanford, U Cinncinnatti, U Minnesota Twin Cities, U Illinois Chicago. All are good art schools, and all offer one or more of the areas of focus that you listed.

My son was a graphic design major at the University of Miami and then transferred to SUNY New Paltz, so I could give you insight into their GD depts. if you’re interested.

RIT has two programs: Graphic Design and New Media Design ( which is more akin to web design with graphic design). University of Cincinnati also has two programs: Graphic Design and Digital Design, which is akin to New Media Design but a bit broader to include some animation.

Thanks so much for the information everyone. It is very helpful.
and @RoaringMice do you possibly have any info about the program at Cornell?

Oh by the way, I know you asked about graphic design and universities, but check out graphic design at Pratt Institute. They have at least three and maybe four concentrations with graphic deisgn.

Parsons The New School for Design is also another one with a strong communication design program, not to mention they have the option of doing a dual degree with Eugene Lang The New School for Liberal Arts.

Thanks for the additional info everyone! Question, someone mentioned early something about a program of some sort at Cornell. Does anyone know anything about this?
